Can anyone tell me if the rear brake backing plate on a 82 model is the same as an 83 , also is the airbox the same

Nope 82 backing plate was a 1 year only, airbox is also different

The rear wheel, brake and backing plate are slightly different between 78/81 and 82/83.  Maico Only make a billet backing plate to use the 82/83 wheel in a 81.  The difference is just a matter of spacing the wheel so the sprockets line up.  Air box for 82/83 was for a single shock bike totally different.

So a spacer and 82 rear backing plate can be used ?

Yes.  Just measure the distance from the sprocket face to the part of the backing plate that sits against the swingarm on both wheels and make it the same.  I think there is about 3 mm in it.
