I had a dream that John Deere made a motorbike, and then this turned up on the Forum!!
I just went and checked that the tractors and air seeders hadn't been spare parted.
It's registered, what,as a tractor? Why didn't,they go all the way and put an outboard on it?
I am wondering what race class it complies with?and if the Hydraulics went awol(as they do on all JD's) has it got a self deploying anchor to stop it?
Gyro Gearloose Lives!!

I just threw up in my mouth!

There was an article about it, in ADB back in the day.
It strikes me that he was well beyond ambitious when he built it. The hub steering, 2WD, and 2WS don't have to go together - it would be SO much easier to develop and sort any one of these at a time, compared to all three at once.
None of them would require a DIY motor, either.
Each to their own, but I find it hard to avoid disappointment that such a talent and vision was ultimately buried by an excess of ambition.

Think there was a Honda cx500 version as well, have a look at the sellers other bikes some nice machinery rc30 then to come rc45 nr750 x2. is it the museum in Queensland I hear it is closing.

I don't think he ever thought it was going to be a success as a bike straight off, it was always meant to be a test bed for innovative ideas. If he had only used one idea on a bike it would have been swept under the carpet and he would never have been noticed.
He has gone on to build some 'conventional' bikes.

Nutty Professor Society, Left to right...
Dave Murray, Ken Horner, Ian Drysdale, Barry Horner, Lindsay Urquhart, & Paul Carberry.
Ian Drysdale invited me and a few others from the Diamond Valley club to his workshop in the early eighties. We knew he had been building something top secret but didn’t know exactly what. We were confronted with his two wheel drive, two wheel steer hydraulically driven motorcycle.
The expansion chamber finished with a closed cone and the stinger bled the exhaust gases from the belly section, it had hydraulic suspension and a carby facing forward on a back to front barrel that he had cast based on a Maico barrel.
With so many different ideas incorporated into one project it was always going to be an uphill battle to get everything working in conjunction so it was no real surprise when not long after our visit the press took it for a spin and they were baffled as to what to make of it.
There was no denying though that Ian was more than capable of thinking outside the square.

Yes the bike is from the museum in Marburg that has sadly closed its doors
that guy certainly has some odd machinery and
yes he even had a John deere XT500 last year i think it was
Nothing new with hydraulic drives or sticking a barrel on backwards but sheesh he sure needs the assistance of a stylist. That Yellow thing looks like its melting

And don't forget his 'barkbusters' were unique for the early 80's too

I had a chance to talk to Ian at Oran Park and give him a ribbing about the dirt bike, while checking out the V8 (2 FZR400 cylinders/carb banks with machined crankcase and crankshaft). It was a while ago but think he said not many but him liked riding it as it had some quirks like being able to crab it along. He did say it would pull at low speed through any conditions and terrain.Think the target market was for the military. The V8 motorcycle was a work of art, disappointed I didn't get to hear it as it dropped a valve.

It was an ugly mother, no doubt about that.....but I do wonder about how well, (or didn't work). Would of been interesting to get the thing sideways....

early christini :D

Still the inventor/builder Mr Ian Drysdale used to purchase new four wheelers off my former boss ,and turn them into great fun and mobility vehicles for our friends that had suffered disabling injuries. ;)

I know some Louisiana swamp farmers that would run that. Most of them use these things

didnt yamaha have a go a couple of years ago ona YZF, supplied 15% of the drive on the front, reduced wheel spin at the rear, was an apperant success but around 15k per unit ???

I believe they did and recall reading an article or test on one somewhere. I wish I could have secured one of these bikes. I've never actually seen one in the flesh.
