Title: Looking for a new YZ400 Rod kit or Crank
Post by: Simo63 on November 27, 2014, 02:09:55 pm
Okay Yama-philes, where can I get a new rod kit or complete crank for the 77 YZ400D we are rebuilding?

Tried evilbay and other sources but no luck.

Any hints?

Cheers
Simo

Quite sure I have rebuilt those cranks and used a newer Prox or Hotrod. Can't remember what I used but it you post the rod dimensions I will look it up.

Are you saying the 83 YZ250 rod kit is a direct fit moto?

I think that is the rod that also fits the 360.

The YZ250 83-87 is 130 long , pin 25mm x 60mm, smallend is 23mm , width 20mm both ends and comes with 1mm thrust washer.
The kit will come with a 18mm bore small end bearing as well.

Prox part number 03.2304
Hotrod part number 8106 (Hotrod list it as 83 to 89 yz250)

From memory the YZ250 rods are a little lighter which shouldn't effect the balance to much.

rods are measured centre to centre. no 400- 500 rod is i66 long. cr500s are 144 ish
that's the longest that I know of

The first option is a lot of dollars just to be able to use the letters NOS, especially as it's all unseen.

Option 2 makes a mockery of my first list, he states the rod is 125 long but others here say the rod should be 130 long(Yes Simmo, rods are measured centre to centre), he then says he can do rod kits for the 400 as well so I think a lot of those early year 250's should be a different rod.

I'm now assuming the 250's in this list use the 125 long rods and the others the 130 rods?????

One problem with the above list is the DT1's , they use a 130mm long rod with the pin hole in the piston 5mm closer to the top.
Some of the 125mm rods have a 24mm pin and some have 25mm pin.
Good news is that I haven't seen a Yamaha crank from late 60's on that I haven't been able to match an after market rod kit to. The 465/490 are a different kettle of fish though, no longer available after market but there is a rod that goes close.

Hi Simo,
I put a ProX rod kit in my 400, because I had a DT crank with a YZ barrel and the DT and YZ rods are a different length. Unfortunately I am O/S at the moment and not back for three weeks but I have the kit number written down at home. I can have a look as soon as I get back if that's any good to you.

rod on right is genuine 400d and left is 250 L (1983 on to at least 86) as you noticed the web is thicker on standard ,the other difference is little end bearing outside diam. is larger ,they are same length. you could use a complete kit for 250 only thing to still check is big end pin length,

I didn't do any homework on these just merely passed on the links. Without sounding flippant it's up to Simo to check with the guy if it is indeed the right one. The second guy says he now has 400 kits. Like anything we buy, especially ebay an OS etc. you need to do as many checks as possible.

No different than buying from a local shop when it comes to VMX stuff. I had an almost toe to toe with the Yamaha guy because he said the head gasket for a YZ125F & E were the same. I said they weren't & he went on about him being the expert & that's what the part list saying. I made him order the part number I had & he made me pay in full upfront. The part turned up, it was correct & the so called expert was nowhere to be seen.

My point is that with the old stuff you have to do as many checks as humanly possible & even then it may still be wrong.

I got a kit from a UK web site a few years back. I'll see if I can find it.

I found my info on the YZ400 cranks. I have it as 130mm long, pin 25 x 60 mm , width 20mm, small end 22mm. As I mentioned before I used either a prox or hotrod from the 83 -87 YZ250. Only difference is the small end at 23(comes with an 18mm bearing) and it is a bit lighter.

Maico 250 rod is a bad match. I have it down as 2mm longer and only 17mm wide.

Okay thanks Sleepy.

A few updates.  Had the rod measured again .. I was REALLY hoping that we had a rare long stroke version of the YZ400D motor  ;D ;D .. but alas .. not to be ... yes it's 130mm long when it was measured again  :'(

So the young bloke is going to order a 83-87 ProX YZ250 rod kit and we can go from there.

Many thanks for everyone's input into this, the comments, the measurements, the links and most of all, the good will .... sincerely appreciated guys  8) 8) 8)  It's guys like you all that make this forum awesome :)

Pretty sure there is only 1 Maico rod common across 250-490  ;)  Longer your rod the better.......... ;D

The part turned up, it was correct & the so called expert was nowhere to be seen.

My point is that with the old stuff you have to do as many checks as humanly possible & even then it may still be wrong.

I got a kit from a UK web site a few years back. I'll see if I can find it.

Wasn't trying to challenge you, just had doubts that my list was wrong when I first posted it and the e-bay seller added to my suspicions and was hoping someone could confirm which models were correct for the rod length.
