Title: WANTED- Honda CR500RE, up to $4K for one visually good, runner.
Post by: John Orchard on November 14, 2014, 02:15:48 pm
Looking for another CR500RE, after having to rebuild every vintage bike I have ever bought, I am not willing to pay high money seein as I'll tear it down to make sure it's right anyway.

Expect to get one that needs some work for $3K, face it, vintage bikes have many worn parts and parts are hard to find & expensive for good items.

Sick of ads saying "fully rebuilt" .... yeh rebuilt with the worn-out bits!

That has come along nicely, I'd like a spare now.  After spending so much on a low-use bike, I have learned my lesson; the difference in value between a bike that has been TOTALLY GONE THROUGH verses one that hasn't, is big.

Yeah, there is no such thing as a "good cheap bike" anymore. People think that buying a cheapie to fix up or restore is more cost effective than buying a fair dinkum restored bike only to find out that that $3000 cheapie needs another $2000 spent on it.....If they can find the parts!

Without naming names ... all I will say is that one of the persons named in Jason's post quoted above ^^ has been involved in a couple of very dubious deals in the past couple of months.  When I say dubious I mean, the bikes and/or parts were misrepresented and in fact, dodgied up to be far better than they were.  Similar in some ways to wrecker fever :)

They might start out good and that gets then a good name but at the end of the day, you will see most retail sellers lose sight of their original ideals. Whether it be because the economy has tightened, the market has been flooded, the availability of genuinely great barn finds has shrunk or whatever ... they eventually start selling shit dressed up as gold .. and some poor sucker ends up losing out.

The one mentioned above has done that recently on 2 separate occasions, with 2 different deals, that I am aware of.  So I would avoid him in future .. unless you like gambling of course :)
