This isn't a quiz as such - I don't know the answer.
I remember them from 70s MX photos; usually on the feet of Maico riders but I never did see a pair in the shops.
Can anyone identify the brand/Country of origin?
-
They may be an early Gecel design. Pic must be from an early Mx des Nations, with Vic Eastwood chasing hard in the Union Jack, probably on a BSA, but possibly during his brief career on a Husky.
-
They look a bit like Daytona's. I had a pair in the late 70's, Adolf Weil wore them from memory.

Yes I remember the boots but may have been Gaerne. Vic would have been on CCM in this shot.
-
Left ones called dave and the right one is Barry :)
-
I suppose it is lunch time over there, Bill. Sounds like you've had a few with lunch............. ::) :D :D
-
Don't know what the Michelin Man boots are but the riders are Adolf Weil on a Maico and Vic Eastwood on a CCM.
-
I thought they were MRobert, but I live to be proven wrong. So long as Bill isn't right [or is that left in this case as Barry was right].
Ah, my brain hurts [but not a much as Bills].
Time for lunch

more puzzling than actually naming the boots.. is why you ask? ::)
-
Vic Eastwood is riding a Maico No question ;)
-
I think they are the pump up UVEX boots. You put them on and then pump them up to suit. And no funny comments , Paul

Because knowledge is no burden...
Nah seriously, I remember them from 70s photos but never saw a pair in the flesh.
I always thought they were a strange looking item and wondered if the ribbed (for her pleasure?) fronts were rubber or leather or what.
I wouldn't mind having a pair in the shed for old time sakes. Same reason I bought my AlpineStars when I stumbled upon them in a 'Cash Converter' store a few years ago.
I hadn't discovered VMX and had no bike - but I recognised the boots as a 70s classic and wanted them for the warm and fuzzies I get as a collector; that's all. :)
-
The next best thing is Moon boots , Wombat :D

Vic Eastwood is riding a Maico No question ;)
Never recall seeing him on a Maico, Bill.... and Firko, what is it that makes you think the Maico rider is Adolf Weil, when Willi Bauer is in the caption ? Do tell....
-
Vic eastwood rode Maicos in 1974 :) i think he won the British open title on a maico in 1974 but stand to be corrected.
Self correction :-[ Vic Allan won both the British 500cc and 250cc championships in 1974.
-
Good enough ! I'm off to the room of mirrors.... ;)
-
I was pissed GD!. I meant to write Willi but Adolph came out the other end! Bill....I just checked my copy of Rolling Thunder and Vic Eastwood, John Banks and Norman Barrow were the CCM works riders in 1975. There is a photo of Vic riding the same bike on the cover of the book. Vic is also wearing those ugly boots in the shot.

I'll pay that.. aren't you still?? it is close to the weekend. ;D ;)

Fair play firko but i think you will find that photo with the boots was taken at the 1974 MX des nations where Vic rode a maico as well as Willi Bauer & Adolf weil .
I will try to upload the complete picture .
-
Maybe Bill but the Maico is a '75 model.

This is the same event 1974 MX des Nations (i think )
First corner shot Vic Eastwood # 34 on the Maico (also wearing the same boots)
#11 Willi Bauer on the Maico (with the boots that Wombat wants to name) behind Vic
Hans Maisch also on the Maico on the inside of Roger De Coster #2
Gerrit Wolsink # 12 to Vics right
John banks on the CCM far left side of picture
#7 Heiki Mikola on the Husky ?
Can someone name the other riders and the venue ?
-
Is that Gaildorf ? The Austrian Track ?
-
Great photo Bill; I love that MX era. Pls advise the name/detail of the book, ta.
And while we're a tad off thread can I ask the origin of why the Poms race in green coloured gear?
I remember the old time open-wheel GP Drivers wore green helmets (British racing green?) but I'm wondering why.
I don't think green is used for Great Britain in any other representative sport.
Bill, Dave King, anyone?
-
Sorry for hijacking the thread Wombat :-[
The book is called off road motorcycle sport by Graham Forsdyke published by Hamblin
I dont know the origins of the British racing green but i love it :)
I am still searching for the brand of those bloody boots though ??? when i was racing schoolboys they were popular in the UK .
-
So they are not UVEX Boots ?
-
So they are not UVEX Boots ?
Apologies Walter i think youre right Uvex Boots :)
The track could be Gaildorf but Gaildorfs in Germany and in some of the wider shots i have of this photo the cars in the car park look British :-\
-
Easy , just check on which side of the track they are riding ;D
-
Shit, You're right Bill. It's obviously Vic Eastwood on a Maico but why? (10 minutes later!) I just read the 1974 year in Rolling Thunder and the '74 CCM team was Jimmy Aird, John Banks and Norman Barrow. Vic Eastwood was riding a Maico for the British distributors BUT in November he resigned with CCM and rode in the Trans-AMA for them.
So Bill, you are spot on and my knowledge is nowthat little bit stronger! What made me think the photo was 1975 was the forks on Willi Bauers Maico which are internal springers which weren't available until the '75 model. Obviously the works team had them at some stage in'74. Note Eastwoods Maico has the external spring forks so he must have been riding a stocker. ....
Now, where's my anorak, I'm off to the raliway station for a bit of train spotting.
-
Ill see you there firko
I love this era if a bloke had to be in a groundhog day situation make it any sunday at a mid 70s Euro GP or mx / trophee des nations and im your Vollenteer ;)

HA! Thread hijacking - is there a thread on this forum we haven't all taken right off the page and back again? It's all conversational and it's all good!
Thanks for the book info (and a well thumbed copy you have!), I'll be chasing that one.
Here's a thought: British racing green might look good on your helmets, ay Bill?
And on the School boy racing series, do you have any old photos from back then? I'd love to see them.
But be careful when posting photos of School boys... ;) :D
-
I've got a feeling that's Farleigh Castle, but I know of another forum that explains the origin of the colours of nationality in international racing. I have an idea its' origin was the Gordon Bennett trophy races in early Bwitish motorsport.... hafta get out the anorak and check it out.... I'll be back ;)
And we're back.... in 1903, Britain and the RAC held their first international motor race (in Ireland), the Gordon Bennett Trophy. The RAC nominated green as the British racing colour for this and subsequent events. Thus the origin of "Bwitish Racing Green"....
-
If the photo does indeed show the 1974 Motocross des Nations, the track must be Stockholm, Sweden because that's where it was held that year. If the photo was taken in England, I reckon it'd be Hawkstone Park.
-
Did the Swedes win it Firko ? and i think it was USA second.
-
Yeah Bill, Sweden won with Bengt Aberg, Hakan Andersen Ake Johnsson and Arne Kring. The 2nd place Yanks had Jimmy Weinert, Jim Pomeroy, Brad Lackey and Tony Di Stefano.

Brad its an incetive to stay in front ;D ( it has not worked much since 1977 though :-[ )

That's a great photo Bill. Is that Bob Hawke or Elvis on flag duty?

That's easy. Those boots are Daytonas. Old man still has an old set in the shed (red/black). Daytona are German, and are still around today. They specialise in speedway & roadracing boots these days.
-

Thanks Wombat :) Yep thats Elvis helping out with flag duties , he did the prizegiving for us .
He was Diguised as Bob Hawke to throw the Paparazzi off ;D
And it would appear that the origin of the boots has be revealed :) Daytonas Well done NR555 :)

You guys are sharp... 3 pages later someone else gives the same answer and gets credited with the right answer.

Youv'e clearly never been to Hawkstone Firko!! But never mind....no, its Farleigh Castle

That was a fork up :-[ Sorry John Indeed you answered the question on page one :)
Luckily VMX 247 the Forum Police was on duty ::)

I've nevefr been there, wrong continent. If it is Farleigh Castle it can't be the 1974 Motocross des Nations.

Hmmm, these boots are hard to locate!
I didn't think they were Daytonas because I actually 'googled' all answers to date - web sites and images of each of the brands put forward as a possibility.
The Daytona site mentions they've shod the feet of many World champions since about 1970 - but not a single photo of any boots earlier than the current models.
So, thanks for that. What a great motocross history there is slopping about in the heads on this forum!
Hey NR555, pls give me a thought/PM if your Dad wants to sell his old boots.

You're welcome..... :D

These are for sale in England; can't say I've ever laid eyes on a pair (brass shin guards??):
LEATHER ASHMAN BOOTS VINTAGE TRIALS/MOTOCROSS, SOLID BRASS SHIN GUARDS, STEEL TOE CAPS

Good one Tim :D
-
The much dreaded Ashman Red Devils! They were the worst boots I ever owned and are one of the reasons I walk with a pronounced limp today. These are even worse than the dreaded Rossis for poor ankle protection. I get a shudder just looking at the photo!

They'd co-ordinate beautifully with the pink Maico you owned some time back... ;)
