Well the old IT was coming together until tonight when i put it all back together and tried to crank it up. It backfired and the kickstarter has gone limp . the shaft is not broken and it engages just doesnt return I havent pulled the case off i just pushed back in the line anyone had this and does it cause major carnage ?.

The return spring could have dislodged itself or broken. I know on some of the older YZs if you dont have the clutch cover gasket in place the kickstart shaft can bind up and not work freely.

thanks DJR i dont know the history on the engine and she will have to wait till i get some other stuff out of the way, but it didnt seem like it broke anything just so hopefully its just something out of place

DJRACING is on the money as they can bind if the clearance is not right. My mate with the YZ490 had same trouble recently, talk to him at broadford and he can give some hints.

hilly what normaly happens is if the spring is ok ,the lug on the end of the shaft turns on its self it is only knurled on to the mainshaft, and after years of abuse they turn and become usless, there was an up graded shaft available .i bought one for an it490 but that was years ago ,then it cost about 90.so who knows what a round now.

If the shaft is the problem and it is the same as the YZ250H then chuck it and replace with a 83 (?) or 84. The later versions were forged not cast like 81. There's one on ebay at the moment item 4620969848. $35 buy it now (a quote not an instruction :D). Get him to send another photo with it turned the other way as the part that breaks is obscured in the photo. SHould be OK anyway if it is 83, but better to be sure. NOS is $75US. My YZ250 was the same and is now fixed. Easy once you've got the shaft. Sorry dude I should have thought of this yesterday when I was talking to you, but it sounded more like the spring. All will be revealed when you pull the clutch cover off for a look. Not sure about IT's but I know this works for YZ's. I can check Zedder for you tonight if you like to see if the part #'s are the same.
HTH ;D
