I would use a modified knobby rather than a paddle for most sandy situations
Paddles hurt gearboxes and clutches

A few years back pirelli had a scorpion mx soft tyre that was designed like a paddle but with thin knobs , MXA raved about it reckons it was almost a "cheater" in sand, Stefan Everts used it to win a heap of Gp's - dunno if they still do it :)

had one on our yz490k bought from california [ebay] full of enthusiasm & 'stupidly' headed out the gate & down the road [out of control]. Gave the tyre to a local m/cycle museum.
