Found behind the ignition cover of 1974 XL350. :o
Where is it from? top somewhere ::) ??
its a bit bigger than a pea.
Flat on top and one side.
cheers

if someone had said they found it in the clutch cover i'd be saying check the kickstart assy as it looks like the end from the positive stop. Maybe from the lower end of a broken cam chain guide that was replaced previously and they couldn't be bothered fishing it out or simply didn't know it was there. Is it steel or alloy?
-
it could be a piece from the bob weights on the mechanical advance?
-
Doc,its a steel piece.
gorby haven't looked there ,thanks
I have just help take motor out of frame and have taken head & barrel off etc, the head/barrel wouldn't come out in the frame, the f... word was used only once, mind ;D
cam chain bits/guide good,
can't find anything wrong or missing yet.
tucker time, maybe find it tomorrow.
thanks

The bike was running, only discovered this bit of shrapnel due to the sidecover gaskets leaking a wee bit, so was replacing them :o

Shirts with buttons have spare buttons attached - maybe just maybe it's a spare tooth...

If it was in the top points cover, then it probably is nothing to worry about.
If it was found in the bottom round cover over the flywheel then I think it looks like a dog from one of the gears (which is an XL350 weakness ) :(
-
Spot on Gorby we had to do some large repairs on our old XL350racers for just such events , and it does look very much like the mentioned mauled puppies too. >:(
-
Didn't really want to split the motor :-\
suppose, got top off might have a look at the bottom.
Is strange where I found it, it was behind the fly wheel cover which is sort of seperated from gear box section. It would of had to do some jumping to get where it was.
Found nothing else ,,bugged if I know how it got there from the gear box
six pack of beam should see the job done.

Tim ps looks like we are going to take three wheels this weekend and not two.
pps did some shit hot tuning this arvo,Norton pulls like a sixteen year old.
-
Pulls like a Sixteen year old Male or Female?? :D Steve and Allison good luck , be careful enough to ride just outside your perceived limits and enjoy my friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gorby wins the money, fourth gear is minus a dog.
cheers steven & alison WA
ps anyone got a spare 4th counter shaft gear for XL350 73
-
sorry about being correct :( I dont have any spare gears but can only pass on some advice passed to me from an older XL350 racer.
1.use the clutch every time, every gearchange
2.hold the clutch in for quite a while before putting it into gear
3.roll the throttle off a bit on jumps so the rear wheel is not spinning flat out when the bike touches down.
4.retain the original rear wheel (it has a cush drive in it )
5.If the gearbox is really bad then the bottom crankase and gears from a 76/77 model are a fraction
stronger.

Thanks for the advise. Most of it I can comply with. Thinking back I recon I know the biggest contributor to my stuffed gear. In an attmpt to lighten everything up, the gear stick was drilled to the shithouse. While it contributed to the diet the xl went on, it also made it very flexible. Every now and then my big hoof or some other object would give it a bang and it would then start catching on the side cover every time I changed gears. This was a little disconcerting :o sometimes as you would be left in limbo land with no drive until it became unstuck from the case. In the mean time the brain had not registered the problem - the throttle would still be twisted. Drive would be rediscovered in a fashion not to the liking of the gearbox. :'(
Anyway thats my diagnosis. (note to self : Piss that gearstick off before you reck soomething else) >:(
I have a spare 350 mtr but wasnt wanting to pull it appart yet. I have a scrapped SL 250 mtr and have been comparing the gearing ratios. They are all a bit closer, so was thinking with a bit of final drive gearing change it might make a good gearbox set up. I dont know if anyone has tried it and what the consequences are.
That might be my next posting on XL's - "What not to do with a gearbox!"
