3rd photo in looks like Ricky Day, 4th photo I think the guy with the chequers on his helmet is Dennis Alderton, father of the late Brett and mentor for Phil Herne and the late Billy Sanders. Great photo's.

Brisvegas not doing too bad Hoony, Nudgee Track 5mins from the airport and Ipswich just starting up at Willowbank. Just a pity Mike Hatcher park in the Gold Coast only now has junior events.
Winter sidecar sizzler on the weekend was a biggie at North Brisbane (Nudgee) top solos and sidecars. Young Michael Penfold escaped from a really bad off, going over the fence into turn 3. Lucky to escape with a shoulder injury only. I think we need to be at a stage where each speedway meeting needs a an air fence. Swimming had a similar problem years ago when the it was stated no times stand unless measured by the in pool electronic timing. About 15k. State systems initially bought a couple and moved them about the state to various clubs when they had their big meets. Perhaps an avenue where MA and state bodies could really assist at grass roots.

Reg McCarthy's party trick
-
Haha, put up to it by Briggo, Ole & Ivan. Fell off on the dewy grass on the infield and burnt his arse . Classic, what a character.
-
Craigy told me the story, said the cops were in on it, chased him into the pits after he dropped the bike?
-
Yeah, def a set up but bloody funny. Reg was at the Showground reunion last year and got the shits because everyone said they didn't recognise him with his gear on. Funny bastard.

Haven't seen Clarkey for years, top bloke and bikes always immaculate.
-
Could a speedway rider explain here, please ... all about the tangs I've seen
over the years; on the peaks of the helmets? Robbie Blackadder has one
in the fifth frame.
I would love to know all about them ... with thanks
-
It's what's known as a "flicker", a spring loaded visor device operated by the tang you mentioned, BB.

More great photos TTezza. The mierson sprint motor in the godden frame was interesting. That was a combination that I didn't think would exist. My brother chris raced one of clarries dohc creations for a while. While I have the utmost respect for him in making his own engine the reality was that they were a terrible thing. It never made anything like competitive horsepower and the engineering left a lot to be desired.

Thanks Foss,
Dumb me ... I thought it was some sort of targeting bulls-eyething,
to keep the eye on the arc of oval - when the bike is sideways. D'oh
-
One I had in the 70s had a couple of slots cut into the outside edges of a squarish helmet peak with a little L at the end. Plastic visor could be pulled fwd and down thus giving another visor in front of the goggles. Was attached to a couple of small rubber bands, when it got dirty a quick fwd at the base would see it retract under the helmet visor and the clean goggles would be the result. I needed it a fair bit when getting passed. Briggs talks about the power of the roost in the corners at the World Longtrack champs and how it would catch the new comers out. Think Barry's son had a big off as a result of it at his first big Longtrack meeting.
-
rosco just sold a NOS one of those peaks
-
The Godden Mierson is really nice. I am after a Godden frame just like that. REALLY NICE!!

A rare beast captured yesterday at the Maitland Motorfest. One of Clarrie Miersons specials. Note the sunburst finning on the crankcases, he cast his own patterns.

Top pix Tezza, thanks. I love the 8/80 JAP outfit, but then I would , wouldn't I ? :)
-
Great shots, superb bikes. Reminds me of being a young bloke out at Brooklyn watching the guys go around. Great memories. J
-
Slightly off topic but something I've wondered about for quite a while, what was the reasoning for sidecars being built to run the opposite direction around the track to solos?
-
Not being a speedway sidecar guy although am in awe at their ability.
I would suggest that it would have to do with most British Commonwealth nations (the origin of speedway) drive on the left side of the road and therefore the sidecar is on the left. As the original racers were just stripped road sidecars it would be natural to turn right?
That has always been my take on it as I have also pondered the same questions while standing open mouthed watching speedway sidecar guys do their thing 8)
Am I correct?
-
I've wondered the same thing. Commonwealth angle seems logical. Auscar went the other way to NASCAR out at the Thunderdome for obvious reasons but no apparent reasons for sidecars??? J
-
If the side of the road that was driven on was the reason then why don't solos go the same way?
I enjoy watching them run, our local guys are 1,2 & 3nz at the moment, from memory 1 & 2 retained their placings from the 2012/13 season. The swingers are the nutters, trusting someone elses throttle hand when there aren't any brakes

The difference between turning left on a stripped road solo and a stripped road sidecar (with the chair on the left) which is what everyone started out with, is considerably different I would think.
I didn't say it was the reason I suggested it was a logical reason. I finished my post with a question to be educated if it was something else. Do you have a definitive answer? If so we would all like to know.
Lets not take this thread down as the photos and posts are just great.
-
Try these Peoples that are in the know ;) http://www.ssrav.org.au also check up on the coming seasons speedway dates.
The rider may have the throttle, but the passengers weight movements STEER the outfit..... ;)
-
i always thought they ran the opposite way to "re groom" the track between solos,ie shove the loose stuff back the other way??,(saves on graders ::)), :P

Unsure why they go counter clockwise but it puts the old British gear levers on the right side and passenger does not have a chance of accidentally hitting? Rode passenger on Vincent's, triumphs and a water bottle in the day. While a few are nutter, not all are, hope my 3 uni degrees attest to that. Swinger controls where the sidecar goes on the track, depending how far fwd or back you get out. I just couldn't get it right with the big 2 strokes and ended up infield too many times and went back to solos. Bit tougher in the old days. To get a start on the Brooklyn Saturday night program you had to look reasonable at the Sunday morning practice. Not too easy after the 25 lap sedan race which was normally the last race. Learnt to ride high and wide. The dirt was like concrete and the cars left craters. No practice on race nights back then, straight out the gate and race. Lot easier nowadays!
-
You are right, Roscoe and Tim, the passenger has a LOT of control so it's really a team, eh ?, I only rode a few DT outfits, I love the bloody things, but EA doesn't !!!, I rode at Nepean once with a passenger that didn't have enough, errrr, bottle, shall we say, another more experienced guy jumped on, I told him what the plan was, to float the boat over the in field-tyres on turn 1 at Nepean as the main guy I was racing would try to clamp us down there, as I knew we'd get the hole-shot, and he was on a 1000 Kaw, us on a Trumpy, he'd get us by the end of the straight, sure enough, just enough room to squeeze the bike though, aimed for the gap, and the chair came up right on cue, and we got by. Top stuff, loved it !!
-
i was gunna come up with another fugging tip joke,but i won't ::), :P
-
Mick :D :D :D This fugger,, that happens to run a tip ,, is often called a joke ;D Cheers Tim754 :)

Great pics of some real bikes Tezza. Sure is some history there.
Yep GD66.The smell of Castrol R40 and methanol. Looks like you had a great turnout.

At a guess I would say Morgan S.A. (The Morgan Mile) 1978?
On the right is Johnny Dewhurst on the mighty HAGON TZ350 Yamaha
built by ace tuner Norm Edwards. I can probably find out who the other
rider is.
-
I reckon it's Gary Flood on the left. Usually rode with #2. Also the bikini fairing with the small
perspex screen. Just can't make out what motor.
-
Yeah, Mark, it appears to be Gary Flood on a JAP on #21 but Dave from Albury thinks that John Dewhurst is on a Suzi TR 500, so does Gary, a great shot from the Morgan Mile.
-
Very well could be Foss. I know that he rode both and if Gary is on a 500 that makes sense.
-
how many of you guys raced speedway in your suit ?
this pic was taken at an early speedway meet at federal park in SA . Laurie Jamison from Adelaide pictured on bike on left the other 2 guys are locals

Yep it's a dirt track sidecar, it goes the same way as the solos, couldn't talk him into going the other way to spice it up a bit. Also one DT bike and one Longtracker in the photos, it is a long track around Maitland, solos had to gear right up so they weren't revving their heads off

is the maitland track the same as where Johnie hoskins started it all in 1923 or was that a totally different venue?
