Title: kdx engine in klx frame
Post by: kdx Geoff on July 30, 2014, 06:14:38 pm

l would like a twin shock vinduro bike at some point and thought l would end up with a PE.

A couple of weeks ago l came across a klx frame and wondered if the '83-'85 kdx200 engine would slot into the frame. Space shouldn't be an issue and they're both single downtube frames but lm not sure about the rear engine swingarm area.

Anybody seen or done that conversion ?

Cheers

Geoff

funny you should think this way Geoffrey as it has crossed my mind a number of times as great combo. the klx frame handles well but the motors wouldn't pull the top off a rice custard... the kdx 2fitty is the king of 80 - 85 enduro motors

measure up my son measure up....

200 John  :)
The 250 frame splits and the exhaust comes straight out the front of the barrel.

It would have to be a good thing.
Question is: will it be better than a KDX200?

Probably not, but it will certainly be rarer  ;D ;)

Doesn't need to be better. Just looking to end up with a twin shock green 2 stroke kdx that's not from the US :)

Keep in mind that part of the reason the KLX has a reputation as a good handler is because the motor is docile

Title: Re: kdx engine in klx frame for a kdx200 twin shock

A couple of months ago l bought 2 rather tired klx's for my twin shock kdx200 project. They're remarkably heavy to move around the shed until the motor comes out !

There's plenty of space in the frame for the little 200 motor. The rear engine mount using the swingarm bolt works for the 200 engine in the klx frame. The bolt diameter is correct but there's a small mount width difference of 6mm I'll need to sort.

There's a minor issue of clearance for the kickstart knuckle and there might be an issue with the airbox/carb alignment but plenty of room in the frame to work with. It looks like the sprocket alignment is pretty close too.

Time to make some engine mounts.

that looks excellent. don't be scared to space the rear mount forward to solve the kick-starter issue. making mounts is easy
