Comparing between a Suzuki 250 RM 1977-78 model to a Yamaha yz 250 of the same era. which one would you consider.
-
For resale value?
-
suzooks had the wood on most brands during that era, I would go the yellow
-
No not for sale value, for racing value.
-
As completely non bias I would say go with the tuning fork Dave .
-
Suzuki if its a Keeper
-
Toss a coin. Both very good Pre 78 models.
However parts and accessories are far more readily available for the Yammy.
-
Both are good but the YZ D model was the winning bike back in the day in most circumstances. I know that will get some "going" but it's how I saw it as a young spectator back then.
Ted's on the money with the parts .. the Yamaha parts are pretty easy to come by, particularly from the USA although Suzuki still stock a surprising number of parts for their early girls as well.
Either way you should be okay :)

1977 Suzuki RM 250 A ---97 kg
1978 Suzuki RM 250B ---101 kg
1977 Yamaha YZ 250 D --?
1978 Yamaha YZ 250 E--?
-
Even though I rode Suzuki back then the Yamaha was probably a better 250, but in the 125 class the Suzuki was the best..

1977 Yamaha YZ 250 D --?
1978 Yamaha YZ 250 E--?
1977 RM is a "B" 1978 C & C2
1976 RM is a A
The best 500 class bike in 1977 was the AW Maico but between the Yamaha and Suzuki, I think the Suzuki was better.
-
The Maico was definitely number one, but I think the YZ400D was second (especially for less than expert riders). The Husky, Suzuki and KTM fill out the field of a pretty good group, in 1977.
;)
-
And I think the GT750 Suzuki was better than the CB750 Honda in 1976/77 as well ::)

Talk about getting off topic ..... Dave was asking about comparing a Suzuki and Yamaha 250's guys, not 500's and not other brands either. All interesting stuff but not responding to the topic.
Does anyone actually read the previous posts before they respond?
-
Really it is like comparing a Holden and a Ford, when everyone knows the BMW is better.
The Suzukis in the 70s were really good bikes and from memory there were more Suzukis on the startline than any other brand.
-
KTM came 1/2/3 in the 250 world GP's that year and was the privateers choice. There happends to be a sweet KTM 400 for sale on Marks and a nice 250 on the Penton site right now.
-
Were you really hoping for an unbiased opinion Dave? ;)
So far you have Maicos, Ktms, Bmws, Holdens, Fords to choose from. ;D ;D
Buy both and decide for yourself?? ???
-
I think Simo gave the correct answer earlier. Buy the yellow one. ;)

Hahaha ... good answer :)
-
Ok, if I was going to buy a suzuki over the Yamaha.
suzuki A, B, C or an N model what would be your choice.
-
depends on what class you planned to race...... the best plan is to get the bike as close to the age cut off as possible unless there is an well known issue with a particular model.... id go N as it will have the most suspension travel....best for old bodies...!! :D ;D you need to sort what racing (if any) you want to embrace.
-
The simple answer is if you want a Pre 78 a B model is the one to get. If you are going EVO really a T is better but you didn't ask that. The N is the newer of the models you asked about but they are ugly the T looks a 100% better.
-
I went last sunday to the Viper meeting and enjoyed myself, I got the fire in the belly again to have a ride at viper, and fishin for your thoughts on these two models.
-
Pre 78, buy a Yamaha. Easy to keep going and as good as anything else that era to ride. Why are you looking at later stuff Dave? If you want Evo, again buy Yamaha or Husqvarna. Easy to keep going and buy parts for. It's up to the rider to make a bike a winner.
-
Dave,
Rider numbers is Viper over the years are slowly heading towards pre85 and pre90.
If you were to ride Viper, the RM/N or T would fit into EVO & pre85
VCM still have a large following of pre78 riders so your RM/A or B or the YZ/D would fit right in.
Also a pre78 bike will allow you to ride pre78 classes in Viper, VCM & CSC.
I have a YZ400D which I'm happy with, the pre78 bikes are getting a little thin on the ground but in saying that, you walked past a YZ250D for sale at Barrabool on Sunday.
Between the RM or the YZ I think it will come down to what ever you can get. The YZ would be a bit better as far as parts availability goes.
