Evening All, back in 1972 my old man bought me a very well used James, I flogged the arse out of it for a few years and sold it to a kid in the 1 horse town for $10.00 and moved onto many other bikes. Always wondered if he still had the bike and I tracked him down and yep, restored sitting in his garage. Mick said there is always only 1 person I would sell it too and that was me, so here it is after 40 something years and I have my 1st bike back and I've still got my very 1st girlfriend who has put up with my bike stuff for many years :D I'm hoping the attached images work

That is awesome.
My first bike turned to ash in 2001, so I'm spared the stress of wondering where it is..

I had a Gemini boss 80 and I don't care where it is

That's so cool Ken, it looks great.

Bloody hell, Bill, a Bantam Bushman ! I put a few of those together when I worked at Bennett's in 1967, My very first bike was a M 21 BSA which I bashed along the Woranora bush tracks followed by a 1957 Triumph Thunderbird on the road.
Foss
-
Beautiful little James there Ken and in pride of place.
I also had a Bantam Bushman around 25 years ago, yet another bike I wish I'd never let go.
-
Love the James - great story
My first bike was a Deckson Daredevil in 72 then saved up $356 and bought a new TY80A in 1973/4 happy days.
-
My first bike was a Norman 145cc Scrambler in 1962.
-
in 1974 bought a Honda SL 125, then TM and RM 125's for the next few years
In '75 I bought a LJ XU1. Kept it a year. Had the chance to buy it back in '82. Bought property instead. Bad move in a way. Did you see the prices those Toranas were fetching at their peak?
Around the mid 70's I also passed up my Uncles XR 302 GT for 3K. Another not so brilliant decision.
-
Great story Ken. Bike looks fantastic. I had a James back in 71 also. I thought they only came out in white with an alloy tank ;D
Regards Greg.

I pleaded with dad to get me a bike . I showed him all the ads in the newspapers for Gemini's and tried to sway him to get me a TAKA just like my mates but noooo.
He arrived home with one of these in about the same rusty condition that he scored for $50
Voskhod 175 with no clutch cable.
never did get around to putting one on . A mate still has the donk

Here is Number 1 and Number 2 (Race bike - Number1)
First bike - Home-made (by Dad), light tube, rigid frame, 98cc 2 Stroke Villiers Junior De-luxe (auto-cycle) engine with clutch, wheelbarrow wheels and no brakes. (Never was a problem, and I fancied myself as a speedway rider anyway).
First Race Bike - Home-made, Victoria 'Nicky' (German - motor scooter) with the cast aluminium body removed. 50 cc 2 stroke with 2 gears, real brakes & suspension (F & R ) & 16" wheels. Geelong Minibike Club (G on the plate) around 1971-2?.
Still racing Home-made bikes... and loving it.
-
Gidday this was first bike thanks to Jeffrey Thynne he is the one that got me hooked, I could tell you so many stories and the fun that this little critter gave me Bear.

First bike was a 1973 Suzuki TS90MX.

Mine is long gone (I tracked down the guy I sold it to and it's long gone) but I have another one now thanks to TM Bill Doe.
I'm rebuilding it to look just like the one in the photo but sadly the owner won't ever look like that again
-

With handle bars like that, you must have auditioned for the part of Tarzan.... ;D
-
Standard bars I suppose one needed the leverage .
-
the 510 I just bought still has them... need to wiggle it to get in thru the garage roller door!

Great nostalgic pics gents. The little James looks fantastic, but way before my time. My first bike was a mighty 1977 XR75 that my grandfather helped me buy. My very first ride though was on a ATC70 trike at a hire place on the Great Western Highway near Seven Hills on the way out to visit my Auntie. No wonder I only ever wanted 2 wheels....
-
My very first bike at 13yo (1973) was an Italjet 50mx that Dad bought new from the local Honda dealer 'Bailey's Honda' in Frankston, it cost $250.
(http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i423/JohnnyRacer89/Italjet50_zps2fdd8100.jpg) (http://s1093.photobucket.com/user/JohnnyRacer89/media/Italjet50_zps2fdd8100.jpg.html)
My second bike was an old Gemini Boss 80 (sorry no pic).
Then at 15yo Dad matched me dollar-for-dollar and we bought a brand new TM125L for $650 from the old Peter Stevens shop that burnt down in Warrigal Rd Moorabbin (Vic).
(http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i423/JohnnyRacer89/John15yoTM125_zpsfdd11088.jpg) (http://s1093.photobucket.com/user/JohnnyRacer89/media/John15yoTM125_zpsfdd11088.jpg.html)
I wore my Golden Breed jumper everywhere. Terry Bryant (RIP) from Bryant Suzuki (Frankston) modded my pipe & kickstart lever, I thought it was so cool.
-
my second bike was a Gemini Boss 80.....so was the first!! I needed two to keep em running :o :o
-
Great thread gents keep it going .

Yeh mine kept breaking the gearshifting mechanism next to the front sprocket. Other than that it was a rocket, use to smoke the fast guy at the local track with a TS100mx
-
that shifter was a nightmare.... the bike rode well and handles pretty good and in hindsight it taught me good riding habits when everyone else had donut wheeled dax's and kwaka 75's. it was a good sized minibike. the baffle in the pipe fell out of mine and used to rattle like crazy. drove me mad.
I had a total failure of the front forks as I didn't know about oil and seals etc and once all the oil went, the forks seized. (you know how those details can get away when your a kid with bike and the bush close by...)
a mate then said "I saw one of those at the quarry, it was set a light for a joke". so another mates brother drives us out and yep charred boss 80 with a good set of forks....she lived for a while longer. what bothers me is a I cant remember what i did with it...I rekon I sold it to another kid locally...the sands of time....

My first bike was a stock standard yellow 1970s Yamaha 100 agi bike that my brother in law owned at the time. The first time I rode it was on a camping trip away, we set up a track through the trees and rode around it for hours. I think we even got the thing to run in reverse after my brother in law rolled backwards off a dam bank and accidentially jump started it. After that weekend I purchsed the bike and rode the wheels off it until I saved enough to by a second hand 1982 Honda CR80R. It is still one of my favourit bikes.
-
like Dave - my first one - shared with my brother - was a Deckson something or other. Put me in hospital it did. First real bike, of course, XR 75 - about a 75 model I think.

c'mon on over to WA Craigy and find out first hand ;D
Never try and push start a Deckson!
-
Very early 70's, my brothers & I got a Deltek to share. 1 bike between 3 didnt go so we put a chair on it so at least 2 of us were happy.
Outgrew that overnight & got my own first bike - Honda SL70 ;D
Was a sad & sorry little cousin to the dominat XR75 & then YZ80 so eventually got my own XR75 & passed the SL70 down the line. Photos to come ;)

First bike, Dad paid $50 for several boxes of parts, (a theme that still seems to run till this day) took me a year to work out how to put it together, after I got it running I was addicted for life

First real bike paid for myself from making Mocasin's for a neighbors business, even used to ride it to work which involved half a dozen laps of my track on the way there and on the way back.
(first car in background)

Those little YZ80's were a scary fast little thing for a young fella used to his XR75. I remember the very first time I rode a mates YZ80C at the local tip. I jumped on it and thought I could pin it like the XR75.......I think I flapped off the back of it for at least 100 meters.... It was then that I knew I had to have a 2 stroke. Had to wait until 1980 for the first CR80 to come out. Showed the Yamaha and Suzuki boys then ::)
-
My first bike was the Yamaha HT-1 90 my brother crashed and broke his leg on, he was convinced it was cursed and that I should have it. He crashed every bike he ever owned including some he didn't.

I see where your exhaust skills come from Geoff.....a life long disease.....have your ever thought about councilling?
-
I had to get councilling for the rear mudguard on the CB :o
-
My first bike was a DT 175a. Brand new from Brian Collins in Kingswood for $609. My second was a MT 250 from Motocross in Penrith for $755. (it was a slug) Have a pic of the MT, to hard to download.

And then, finally, my very own first NEW bike!!! The mighty little XR75 ;D
Racing Mate helmet, Carrera goggles, Jofa mouth guard & Rossi boots - the wonder years ;)

Jofa and Carreras. Same here. I reckoned life couldn't get much better......... until I discovered girls! J
-
Yep I was Joffa, Carrera's, Rossi's and the gloves were yellow with the black rubbers strips down the fingers, gee that must have been all the shops sold ?!
-
Yep & the Rossi's were one size, large or large :o :o :o
You had to make them fit by increasing or decreasing the number of footy socks that you wore (well thats what your parents would tell you when you could only get hand-me-downs ;D ;D ;D
-
We used to race bicycles before anyone had a motorbike.
I'm older here, but this is the bike I raced my mates on -
around the grounds of local Catholic primary school. The racing
got pretty serious for some of us, but also was immense fun.
And often very, very funny. Heaps of stacks.

-----------------
My first unit was this go kart. It had no clutch, so was push-clunk-started,
then the user would leap in as it took off. Engine was a villiers out of a
cement mixer. I still love STP stickers! Other stickers are some little
flowery-hippie things ... perhaps out of gum wrappers?
There's a little on-off push kill button at very top of right handlebar
(like a lampshade's switch.).
Extra struts under seat after wood broke and one mate's arse fell through
while on the move. It was a crappy old thing, but I was excited as hell!
I then did a straight swap for my first bike ... a crappy old thin-barrel 125 Bantam.
That's a clip out of Victoria's State Savings Bank passbook

My neighbour VCM luminary Matt Rossi has believe it or not an old pair of Rossi's. John did you realise Metro make replica's of the old gloves? I have a pair. J
-
Did the pushy keep you away from the priests Rog? J
-
My Catholic mates seemed to be the heaviest drinkers/anarchists. I didn't even know
there was supposed to be an ongoing line between the two religions across Australia.
We kids all just got on well together. And got pissed together.
(But let's not thread-shift down that political path)

I've only seen them in black.

Yellow/Gold Tan with black strips up the digits. I think I paid $35 for them. J
