Title: ANZac's
Post by: Digga on July 19, 2014, 12:15:42 pm
Thought this might be an interesting thing to look at & no disrespect to the real ANZAC's (hence different acronym) but another aknowledgemnet of the achivements of our small but great countries down under on this kaotic planet punching well above our weight  ;)

Australia New Zealand absolute champions

Criteria is "World Champion" 2 or 3 wheels (no cars), current or past, so lets start with a few & I am sure others can add plenty more to the list (with or without wikipedia). Lets see how long the list goes  ;)

New Zealand
Ivan Major - world speedway champion 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1977, 1979
                - world long track champion 1971, 1972, 1976

Shane King - NZ, world 500 MX champion 1996

Australia
Wayne Gardner - world GP champion 1987

Troy Bayliss - world SB champion 2001, 2006, 2008

Jason Crump - world speedway champion 2004, 2006, 2009

Troy Corser - world SB champion 1996, 2005

Jay Wilson World Junior MX Champ

Caleb Grothues  World Junior MX Champ

World Supersport Champions

Andrew Pitt X 2
Chris Vermeulen
Karl Muggeridge

Matthew Phillips  World Under 21 Enduro Champion

The AMA Supercross Champs is recognised as the World Supercross Championship by the FIM has been for almost ten years.

All this is without recognising the riders who got second or third.  Gregg Hansford was one of the best ever.

You only need to look at some of the results of probably the most famous of all races, The Isle of Man.

Not an official World Championships  The Yanks call everything they run a World Championship.  They think the Indy Car drivers are the best open wheel drivers in the World and the NASCAR drivers the best drivers in the World.

Nigel Mansell went to the US and won their Championship first try and was called a rookie.

Don't get me wrong the Yanks are good but.

That means you'd better add the rubber kid Levi Sherwood to the list

Sorry Doc, Kev says the Vintage Worlds don't count. He should know, he's never been to one.

OK  I didn't know you had to go to a meeting to be allowed to comment on it.  If you want to include everything the yanks called a World Championship you better include the World Mini-Bike Championships and the World Four Stroke MX Championships.

I thought we were only talking about FIM World Championships.

Sorry my mistake

Bill are you implying that sidecars aren't motorcycles.  Did you know that the FIM also sanction snowmobiles and ATVs.

OK  Mick Headland/ Paul Waters Track Racing Sidecars 2009
Mick Headland / Jesse Headland Track Racing Sidecars 2010
Darrin Treloar / Jesse Headlan  Track Racing Sidecars 2011

Warwick Nowland & Steve Martin RR World Endurance Champs 2000 & 2009

Barry Smith RR (Formula TT)  1979  1980

I think Graeme Crosby won a TT Formula One Championship in the same era

There is also several Team 1st places in Speedway World Cup and ISED in Jnr (under 21) in 1995 and E2 in 2011.

and a World Junior Team MX Championship win for Australia in New Zealand in 2009.

IOM TT lost its staus after 1976....
Title: Re: ANZac's
Post by: KTM47 on July 21, 2014, 06:36:28 pm
Yes but they had a World TT Championship after that at several different circuits.

The MA MOMS lists Barry Smith winning a Road Race (Formula TT) World Championships in 1979 & 1981.

IOM don't own the rights to the name Tourist Trophy (TT).
