Hi lads,
I just acquired a 1977 Montesa 247 T. Its in very original condition, but needs rewiring and a few minor things.
Who supplied parts for Montesa - and where can I get a parts manual, workshop manual and wiring diagram?

Hi lads,
I finally got around to checking out the new spanish addition. Here are a couple of photos:

It hasn't been run for some time, so I cleaned out the carby, checked the spark (big and blue), and gave it a few kicks.
Problem: The kickstarter will turn the motor over without the spark plug, but it seems to slip and will not turn over the motor when it has compression.
Any ideas or hints as to what might be wrong?

Yes, it could be. I think I need to do some more investigation.
I haven't even got a manual yet, but it will be on its way soon.

It looks pretty original, but it does need a little work to get it going, and not having any experience with Montesas, I'm learning as I go along.

Disconnect the clutch cable completely and then
kick it over. Sometimes there is not enough
freeplay in the cable and clutch is slightly engaged,
causing the kicker to slip thru.

Very complete and original looking bike Mark. Is that tank sticker OEM. Looks like it is but I can't remember seeing it in the past (but then I don't take a lot of interest in 'bogwheels' ;D.

Photos for reference of a recently resurrected 247 which is very similar mechanically to the 247T pictured. Bike owned by Cedric Van Heerden of Gladstone.

It does look very similar - except for the tank and a lot of polished alloy!
Very pretty.
I have the trials tank and seat also, and it looks pretty much the same as that - except its not shiney...

Hi lads,
Well the brains trust worked !
I got it started today - and after revving like crazy because of a twisted throttle cable, it settled down into a nice idle.
The clutch cable was too tight, once I fixed that it took a few kicks and away it went.
Thanks guys.
Still some more fettling to do, but at least I know it runs!

What about that sticker, is it OEM? It says "Trail". With the long seat it looks like its a Alpina rival.

It's the real deal. The 247 trail version had the larger tank, bigger seat, buddy pegs and different final gearing.
Underneath that and it's all Cota 247 trials.

Yeah it is a real model - the compliance date is 4/77. Its a 1976 model - and it does have a bigger seat and thats about all.
The sticker just goes over a previous model's tank. And you can actually sit on that seat!
Its much the same concept as the Bultaco Alpina, but I think Bultaco sold a lot more of them.

Yes vinduroing one is a great idea. I like riding the fund-raising mountainous trail rides on obscure old trials type bikes. The looks and questions you get are priceless and they are actually pretty good to ride when it gets to the rough and steep stuff.
For maximum shock value, a neat trick is to ride up quietly past all the wheezing people holding onto modern dirt bikes stuck on some long steep hillclimb, turn around at the top and ride back down again for another go.
The Montesa Mountaineers and OSSA Explorers are actually very close in design to their pure trials brothers and offer high levels of handling in the super rough stuff while some of the Alpina models are a fair bit removed from the trials Bultacos in performance. I have one of the least trials-oriented Alpinas (the M138) and the handling feels at home on an MX track and through the bush but the bike is very hard work in trials sections. The first model Alpina (M85 I think)(I had one as a youngster) was a lightly altered trials bike much more like the Mountaineer/Explorer concept.
