Would anyone have the size differences in mm between the drum brake on the KX450,420 or 400 compared to a drum braked KDX200 of 1983,84,85 vintage ?
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
'82 kdx450 140mm
'83-'85 kdx250 140mm
'83-85 kdx200 measure tonight but its smaller than the 250
'81 kdx175 120mm
l have a 250 sitting on 200 front wheel so l imagine the 250 front wheel fits in the 200 for a bigger brake.
Cheers

Thanks Geoff. I read how the KDX450 brake can be fitted to the KDX200, albeit with some modifications, and offered noticeable braking improvements.
Something for me to think about.
Thanks again.

No modifications necessary.
l have a 450. So l could fit a 250 headlight mount to it l spent a bit of time swapping front end bits off a 200 250 between frames so l could have the lower clamp mounting bolts for the headlight mount in use.
The 175 shares nothing and nothing will swap with these other bikes.
The clamps will interchange between the 200 250 and 450, swap straight over. That means you can use any front end of any of those 3 bike to any other one as a bolt in no mods fitment including the head stem bearings.

My 450 has ended up with a 200 lower clamp and 450 upper clamp for the rubber bar mounts. l used the 450 forks and wheel but l could have fitted the forks and front wheel out of any of the 3 to the bike. l have a 200 to sort out later and will fit a spare 250 front wheel for the brakes when l do it.
Cheers

Thanks Geoff. Do you think the 450 brake works better than the 200 ?

Both the 450 and 250 brakes are 140x28 mm so should be better than the 200 all things being equal but the way the backing plate interacts with the fork leg is different between the 200/250 and the 450.

You'll need the 450 forks if you're going to use the wheel.

This site isn't bad for getting specs, you can even check out a Drysdale or Zero (no HL though)although they do have some details wrong

Although I believe if you sort your existing brake it should work fine, new shoes, new cable etc.
I tweaked my 175 brake and it works fine, KDX175 front – 120 x 28
Bigger is necessarily better (that what I tell the missus anyway)

she still thinks 5 inches is 7.... ;D (use a special ruler)
