I rode some events in 84 with him and he had the 400 , for some reason I think he rode a KTM in 85?

Pelle would have opened his shop, Prorider, by 1985?  If I remember rightly he was on a Kato from floods very late in '84?

Amazing rider, I remember him,Geoff Ballard and I at Katoomba for a mid week ride in late '82, Pelle was on a white 250, Ballard on his Maico 490 and me on a 430, Ballard was hosing me as per usual, Pelle was absolutely smoking Geoff, was his first ride back here after the GP season, amazingly fast, I mean A-M-A-Z-I-N-G-L-Y  F-A-S-T!  GB and I were suitably impressed, both he and I were fast up there in the sand, or thought we were!

coming from the European theatre he would have been fast straight out of the gate down here! I remember him always being up there and occasionally pulling a win in the state and aussie champ events...

Granquist won the 250 and 500 Australian motocross championships in both 78 and 79.. then went to Europe to ride the 500 mx grand prix.
He took up enduro after retiring from motocross with a knee injury.

When he first came down under he was sponsored by Ric Andrews who was part of the MR Motorcross inner circle.

Pelle Granquist…
Brings back a few memories, though my memory is somewhat foggy with regard to dates and times.
This story is to do with the suspension on Phil Thew Moto’s (PTM) Suzuki sponsored riders and this time in particular with Stuart McLachlin when he was competing against Pelle Granquist in the Mr Motocross series at Tivoli raceway in the late 70’s or early 80’s.
Phil (owner and operator of PTM) was concerned as to why Pelle’s bike appeared to handle the stutter series of short sharp jumps far superior than Stuart’s Suzuki.
As part of my service work (Army) I was a professional photographer amongst many other rolls. Phil asked me if I could shoot a couple of super 8 movie film rolls of Pelle riding against Stuart. So when Pelle was completing up at Toowoomba at a major motocross meet at Echo Park riding a Husky if memory is right. I filmed some 10 minutes a movie film with the two riders fighting in close quarters. Especially when they were traversing the various high speed stutter jumps.
After developing the film I brought a movie projector and the film over to Phil’s home early one evening at Mitchelton and we proceeded to spend the rest of the night and into the early morning playing, re-playing and slow-mowing the film until the reason for Stuarts bike was uncompetitive to Pelle’s. It turned out to be both the swinging arm length and the angle of the rear shocks along with poor rebound quality of the hydraulic part of the rear shocks.
Again if my memory is right it was then Phil started experimenting with the Fox brand a rear shocks.
Phil impressed me with his ongoing analysis and support that he gave his sponsored riders of Peter Boyle and Stuart McLachlin.
Where the movie film is today, I don’t know but it was interesting viewing to see to differences between the two brands of competition bikes.

Rodger.  It is interesting that you mention Phil and his analysing of suspension etc.  This is probably why he brought a Maico in 1977 an AW400. Noel Harker got to race the Maico.  He (Noel) ended up getting the bike back a few years ago and rebuilt it.  Just another point Stewart's name is spelt Stewart McLachlan, a great rider taken from us way to early.

It probably would've been 79 when Phil was doing the suspension testing.. Stewart was still getting up to speed in 78 and Pelle went back to Europe to race the GP's in 80.
I remember Stew running Ohlins at one time in that period

a bit of interest on Pelle's 390 from 1979, i ended up with it towards end of '79, it was a rocket, had excellent suspension but not much different to the other stock 79 cr i had, just better, it was also faster than my stocker, not a lot but faster and smoother, it also didnt steer, not for me anyway!  Pelle said steer it with the throttle!  Lovely engine, just wish it steered like my '81 430, or better still if they both steered like my '82 RM!

My apologies in the spelling of Stewart's name.
