Hey guys, what years were the autos made and in what sizes? What HP did they make?

1973-1977. 340cc and about 40hp. ;D

76 to 88 I think but Shoey will know more than me. 500 was the biggest size but they over heat easy if your thinking sidecar

Some of the guys were talking yesterday about wanting to, and not being able to up-shift while they are in the chair (left-handers) and the question came up about Husky autos.
When you say they get hot.....engine or gearbox?

the last model 430 was water cooled. on the café Husky website, a clever man has made an oil cooling system on a 500 air cooled by bolting on a watercooled clutch cover and using the water pump to pump gbox oil through a cooler on the headstem... very ingenious

you could run a 12v pump or a countershaft driven pump with a auto trans cooler if the trans oil was getting too hot,wouldnt be hard to rig up and keep the oil from turning to varnish ;)

Two issues the first being the heat and I'm sure with some cunning engineering you could win that one but the other is the clutches are rather frail and break often when stressed. Husky guys would fit smaller rear tyres to help reduce the load and being auto wheel spin no problem. You can retro fit the later clutches to the big air cooled units but agian they just broke less often. I just feel it would end in tears. But I like the idea.

The mechnical process associated with the operation of the auto results in high friction and therefore high operating temperatures.
There are quite a number of clutches in action whilst you are riding so friction losses are high.
In wet weather it does not present an issue but in warm weather you tend to look for the creeks for some cooling relief.
The big 500 airdcooled suffered the most as a result of the shear horsepower going through the clutch system. having said that the 500's are really good when in the right hands.
Most auto's run quite hot , but if managed correctly they are just as effective as a manual bike , if not better in some circumstances.
Maintenance is the key and it really takes a while to understand what makes them tick and to get the best out of the engines .
Autos were manufactured and sold to the public from 1976 - 360cc air cooled to 1988 430 watercooled. They were sold prior to that to a few countires for use in the military. The initial Military model was 250cc.
The 430cc watercooled final model produced was outstanding and performed very well on the world enduro stage. I have a 1988 430 and its absolutley unreal.
I would recommend against putting an auto engine in a sidecar

Several pics of different oïl cooling system have been posted but at
my advice not what you are talking.
I've been told the water pump couldn't stand
the oïl temperature.
There are some interesting cooling system added to the motor.
An atc 110 oilpump attached to an gear shaft.
And the uptite system, attached to the last shaft.

your right, it was the oil pump off the countershaft sprocket not the water pump, I type corrected.... ;D :D
