Looking at a used bike that these guys are selling on consignment, looks to be a good enough thing at a reasonable price but would feel a lot better if someone more trusted was able have a gig at it for me. Its a DR650 with 25k up on the clock and lots of fruit for adv riding, should be pretty well ok but as we all know in the wrong hands a bike can be faaarked totally in plenty less miles than that, if the "sales pitch" is truth ::) it should be well worth the investment but the salesman sounds like a stereotypical sort so im not gonna rest my purchase 100% on his word. Just a check for flat spots in rims, fork condition, linkages, sub frame cracks/bends, oil leaks etc etc is whats needed. Any chance someone is heading past there in the near future??
Cheers, Brendan

Bout the same price r/a here in Vic for the DR650, I work at and sell bikes for a Honda/Suzuki dealer ;D I could have a stock bike we have that has 350k on the clock for the same as id pay for this one, this bike has over 3k (retail) in extras fitted and i'd spend a few more $$'s also. Even in my position i feel this would be a better option, obviously only if the bike isn't a dog :)
Cheers, Brendan

This would be a good buy with the extras it has and next to no K's at Echuca

Can do tomorrow arvo, Rookie.
But best for you to give me a call tomorrow morning and remind me....
Anything I should particularly be looking for?

Hey B, there is a nice looking nx 650 dominator at Sheltons Upholstery in Kangaroo Flat. is that model on your radar?
its the multi colored model. I don't have any details but I saw it parked out the front yesterday but its been for sale for yonks so you might get a bargain
give Ray a call if its on your list

Awesome Nathan thanks a lot, just looking for subframe damage or dodgy repairs cause it looks to have had hard cases on at some time which overload can ruin the DR's non removable (welded) sub frame. Well just that and all the usual things that would give away that the bike has been owned by a caring soul or a retard!! :o
Thanks John but just like my tenere the dominator has little options for aftermarket long range fuel cells and too much plastic to break in the event of an off. The only 2 things that have me reluctantly considering replacing it with a DR :'(

Hi Brendan,
The racks for the soft panniers are as heavy as what's on that bike, so it could have just had light bags on it.
One thing to look for is the top chain roller that is mounted on the upright section of the frame just above the foot peg.
This should be removed as it can tear a section of the frame out if the chain has heavy contact with it.
The bearings in the rear linkage will more than likely be worn as Suzuki never put enough grease in them and the head stem from new. Apart from that there's not a lot to look out for.
Here's a couple of links to some DR tips.

Hey Rob, thanks. Yeah I was gonna have a yarn to Nathan in the morning about a few other little chestnuts when it comes to dr650's like you have mentioned, the upper chain roller should be removed yes, and the primary gear shaft if prone to leakage after the seal pops out as there is no retainer! ::) a problem fixed on 12 models onwards and an easy retro fit fix for previous models. Lack of grease and grease nipples in the linkage area is also a point on concern as is the wheel bearings only being sealed on 1 side!! My only concern with this one is the sub frame as the rack fitted are "Happy trails" racks and normally come as a set with boxes so its possible it could of lugged some big weight in its travels. Saying all this makes ya wonder why anyone would want one ;D but despite the DR650's factory failings there is still no better (single cyl) bike to build up and tailor to your needs as these things, versatile, robust and cheap..a but like me actually ;D

I have done a few trips on my DR, last one was a 6500k loop up through the flinders to Maree and across to Lake Gairdner, back down to Victor Harbor and back to Melb. I have just put a Keihen pumper carb on mine and have a Web cam and 10.5.1 piston to put in it along with the billet third gear set from Nova racing in the UK.
Just the Carb made a huge difference..

Well, you got one out of three right.

;D shit ya know I'd nearly forgotten about that!! The last I remember it was 3 o'clock Easter Monday, it was 5 hours after I'd first "attempted" to leave the SMC when Drakie asks "you don't need to rush off do you" ::) after packing up a town hall, delivering a bus back and general tidy up I was ready to go!! I turned around to realize my little Deltek was still sitting at office area, so I rolls the winda down and says to D "hey ya wouldn't mind dropping that mini bike off at Geoffs for me would ya... ;D and vrooom......I was gone!! ;D ;) In hindsight I could of possibly consulted with you first before dumping my shit down at Casa de Morris, but then again...I thought it a chance if i picked it up before next Xmas you might not have even realized it was there yet :D
-
No worries Brendan, it just makes me chuckle when guys leave stuff here and then forget about it.
I have to learn to keep quiet and I would probably secure more bikes myself, but then no one ever seems to forget anything decent ;D
-
No one but no one forgets the 6'2 blonde with the 36 28 34 figure do they.....
(they never seem to tire of telling me about her anyway)
-
A big thanks to Nathan for heading out to inspect this bike for me today, sorry for sounding like I was giving the wind up but as was talking to you I had about 5 customers staring me down and listening to me caring much more about my next bike than theirs! ;D the big DR will be heading Vic bound soon :D
Cheers, Brendan

Are you keeping the Tenere Brendan?

Are you keeping the Tenere Brendan?
I don't think so mate, as much as I love her I have limited options for adding fuel range to her and as I plan to do some serious trips over the next few years the fairings and side covers on the big Ten are quite vulnerable and expensive to replace. I actually have a set of nos side covers in a box that will go with her. They're worth about $950 for the pair as a dealer sold part!!! :o
