Title: YZ125a Facelift
Post by: r4brightred on April 24, 2014, 12:18:16 pm
Time to transform my trailer queen. I'm gonna go with a white paint scheme and change the top end. I need to have it done for the big Unadilla event next month so I need to get moving. Spraying paint stripper on the fenders and watching my beautiful silver paint start bubbling really sucked. Its a shame that the fenders for these bikes aren't reproduced.  I'll add some pictures as I go.

I thought the DC plastics fenders were close for these?

The fenders for these bikes are a sore subject for me.  I considered the DC fenders for this bike on more than one occasion. The problem is that they are vacuum formed and are not going to have the crisp lines of OEM. On British ebay a few years ago a company was selling an injection molded white fender but rumor was that it was smaller than OEM so I never bought one. Now they are no longer listed anyway. I really wish someone would tool up and make these fenders. My guess is that quite a few DT, MX, and YZ owners would buy them. On a brighter note (no pun intended) I just got my top end back from Vapor Blast Solutions and I'm happy with the results. I pride myself on doing my own work but I couldn't think of any way that I could have cleaned these parts up as well in my backyard so I bit the bullet.

R4 - can't remember 100% the name - but still see it floating around sometime - but Concourse Plastics/VMX Plastics  around here and Australian ebay was doing excellent replicas of bits and pieces for Yams of this time

To the best of my knowledge Concourse never went into production with the 1974-75 MX/YZ125 fenders. I'm running their front number plate on two of my 125's. I tracked down a Noguchi rider a while back and asked him if he remembered if the fenders were molded white or painted white. I was pleasantly surprised when he told me that his uncle did the paintwork for Dirty Distributing and that he remembers the fenders being painted white. So now I can paint them and feel like they are correct. If he had told me they were molded white I would have been borderline distraught.  His uncle said they painted in lacquer and to use Chevrolet commercial white.

Sorry guys, I thought I would have more to show you by now. Too cold and rainy this weekend to get my plastics in primer. I'll try again in a few days if the weather cooperates. My fender decals and ovals should arrive in the mail tomorrow. Here is the NOS pipe and Noguchi specific decals. Carburator should be back from vapor blasting tomorrow.

I shot the plastics with a heavy build primer. The stuff is like liquid bondo. Its great for filling imperfections. I need to spray the color this weekend. I switched out the chrome handlebars over to a black set and the engine is buttoned up. I have two weeks to get it finished.

Excellent work, but,
I can't believe you repainted the Silver tank
I noticed 2 primed tanks in the photo

The silver tank in the first photo is still silver. There was no way I was going to sacrifice that tank after the terrible time I had installing the decals on it.

Well here she is boys. My "Team Dirty" Dennis Hall #254 Replica. I've wanted to build this bike for a few years and I was fortunate enough to make it happen. Thanks to my brother David for cutting all the stripes after I realized a few days ago that the pre-made 125a stripes wouldn't work. I did a good bit of research on Noguchi and Dirty Distributing in order to get the bike as accurate as possible. Unfortunately Dennis passed in 2005. I like to think he would have gotten a kick out of seeing my bike. The old ad photo shows Dennis with the trophy.

Thanks for the compliments. No it won't get dirty! LOL. I have two other 125A's that get plenty dirty so this one can live the easy life. The engine paint is PJ1 engine case satin black.

I like the wood crate too. Frankly I'm surprised I thought of it. Here's a few more pictures. I just noticed I failed to tuck the brake cable back into the bracket on the front plate. Oops.

thanks - will check out the paint - my "satin black" is a lot shinier than that and doesn't look right.
