Title: The One That Will Never Be
Post by: Tahitian_Red on April 23, 2014, 01:31:09 am
As I'm winding down and selling off most of my bikes I started thinking about the one bike I wanted to build, but never will.  For me it is a replica of the CZ "Rocket Rex" Staten used to holeshot the world at the 1975 Carlsbad USGP.  The bike was a red-framer with the shocks moved forward (instead of cantilevered), with a Bassett pipe and motor work by Harry Klemm.  I would have put Maico forks on it like Rex had before the CZ factory guys made him take them off.

For you what bike is the one that will probably never be?

An interesting and somewhat 'different' question. I'll be interested to see what people say. For me, there isn't one. I never really followed MX back in the day so never had a hankering to build or have any particular special. Other than the HL500 for which I had a desperate passion. And THAT one was realised in about 2002 when I got to own an original very low hour ProFab version.

It is an interesting question. I did build up a replica of Jim Pomeroys GP winning Bultaco. Whilst the actual race bike was pretty much a Pre production model of the iconic Mk 7 it none the less consumed a lot of time attending to small details to get it just right. I only just happened across a colour photo that proved I had painted the shocks black instead of red which of course I have to rectify. Having said that what I would really like to do is build a replica of Gaston Rahiers RA125. I saw him ride it at Wallan and its always stuck in my mind. Just love the trick works bikes of the day! J PS Unapoligeticaly stuck in the early 70's!

A 82/83 RC honda 250 would be on my list if and when I had the time and money. I know how to make the parts but the time involved and the cost is beyond me at present.

Gaston Rahiers RA125 8) that would be one, especialy for me as Im just as short and could raise the foot pegs up like he did, plus he was my hero and yes I wore all the Heckle stuff, matter of fact still have the boots, chest gaurd, Bell helmet :)

That's right Shelpi you could even have the bars angled back for shortness!  I reckon Gaston nailed the whole Euro thing ( in my eyes anyway) and combined it with Nippons finest. You see a few later model RA's around but I've never seen a Gastons model anywhere. J

At the risk of being called a nerd didn't Gaston use an AGV helmet? Happy to be corrected. J

I'm 6' 1" 95 kg and that's why I would look wrong on a Gaston replica. In fact I look wrong on most bikes! J

I have the same problem Jerry. I'm 6'2" and 110kg (i need to lose a few kgs) so I don't fit alot of smaller bikes. Or is it they don't fit me? Remember, the factories built bikes to fit their rider(s) of choice.

As for the one bike that I must have..... I don't think anybody has ever made it yet. A big bore XR500 motor in a 1984 CR500 chassis would suit me nicely for a pre85 weapon.

Hey, I just love Honda 4 strokes and building my own bikes  ;D

I would love to have a 1974 RH 250Suzuki and the RN 400 Suzuki but I know the chances of this are pretty slim... Have to stick to the TM's instead.

I doubt I'll ever own either one but I would really like to restore/own a YZ175 and a RM125m. And because it was the first bike I remember my dad riding, a Ossa SDR.
