After spending some more hours riding the '74 TS250 today, the kickstarter is proving to be a real pain. Literally! ::)
It sticks out like and elephant on heat and makes life pretty hard when standing.
1. Is this the proper lever for this model?
2. Are there any options that tuck in better?

Thanks folks. :)

Tony ....I can relate to this as have a 69 model and the kicker is a pain in the Rs
Not too sure if "you " have the fine or course spine ??? if it's a course there are plenty of options Ie Pe Rm Dr
I have the small fine spline and the options few .... toying with the idea of adpt a TS 185
-
It's a pretty course spline, oldfart. So I might have options then.
There's no clearance issues, so no idea why it curves out like it does. :-\
Even one that's just straight would be better.
-
Tony you can bend kickstarts using an oxy torch and get them perfect. My son's TY80 (a bike on which the standard one sticks out terribly) has a custom bend that is just beautiful. I really don't know what medication the designers of kickstarts were on back then. My old TS185K was pretty bad for that too like your TS250 from memory

try a TS250 ER type ;)
-
try a tm250 kicker but might be hard to find one these days.yeah my ts185/250a's have the same shape kicker and u know its there most of the time, with the 185 I put a tm/rm125 kicker on it and it tucks in nicely now and clears the rm125m down pipe I use on it as well
-
Neat job, David. I don't have an oxy set, but it seems like a good option.
Might look for a TM or ER lever and give that a go.
It's bloody near impossible to ride standing with the lever the way it is.
-
A TM125 Kickstarter will cost $#@&% if you can find one Tony :o (second only to the mag cover)
-
Mmmmm. Might have to be an ER one then. 8)
P.S. anyone got a spare? ;)
-
Check with a dealer for the price on a new TM/RM lever. I recall buying a new one for my RM125S not so long ago and the price wasn't horrendous.
-
Apparently TM/RM125 (M) kickstarters still available.

$216.00 (US)..................
-
No thanks.
That's more than I paid for the bike..... ;D
-
Oxy torch is the best method then. 8)
Presuming there's nothing else wrong with the kickstarter? (spline, pivot)

Wellllll, just checked the local price for the kickstart lever for TM/RM at .............$130rrp. Sometimes picking up the phone and ASKING for a price is wise so you have the facts. Still, if you want to buy o/s without checking coz 'it'll always be cheaper' go ahead. Not saying it'll fit the TS Tony but it might.
-
I wouldn’t recommend hitting a kick start arm with heat as it will most likely soften the material and it will most likely bend easily afterwards.
You might get away with it on something low compression
-
there is a couple on ebay world wide for under $40 plus postage
-
Tony, TM250 is the 1 you need. They pivot at the bottom and tuck in much better ;)
-
Thanks Doc,
I figured you'd know for sure. ;D
Have you tried 250ER?
Just thought that might be easier to get. And cheaper.... 8)
-
Not sure of the 250ER spline size sorry Tony. Could be an alternative ;)

they look the same ,its the pe/rm you have to watch out for there the coarse bastards

Ok, now I'm confused..... (more) :(
I thought my 1974 TS250 has a coarse spline......
The shaft is about 19mm in diameter with about 18 splines? I didn't take my glasses out to the shed, so it could be one either way.
-
Tony .... if you have the course spline you can fit all of the late model kickers ie Pe Rm Dr Sp and so on.
The benefit of doing this is as Doc has explained they pivot at the spline knuckle , to add insult I think these will clash with your up pipe ;) due to the fact you have a up pipe which will not allow the lever to fold inwards.... if you get my drift
What distance do you have from your spline to underside of pipe and I will check my array of kickers to see what matches
-
That crossed my mind too.
I've got about 210mm from the centre of the kickstart shaft to the bottom edge of the pipe.
I can get my hands on a 'kit' pipe for it, but the resulting ground clearance reduction and no side stand will be a disadvantage 'if' it ends up getting Vinduro or trail use. :(
Not as simple as I thought.
Thanks to all for the suggestions and advice. :D
-
yup, Stew is on the money ;) PE250B/C RM250/370/400 and DR should all have the same coarse spline.
The later N and T models are the same size but mounted via a bolt into the shaft not a pinch bolt so these are a no go.
The RM400C kicker which is more or less typical fits ok but it does hit the exhaust when it's folded in. Even so it tucks in way better than std. The only real issue I think you'll have is the damn thing will rattle against the pipe ::)
Will have another look tomorrow and try and post some pics showing the interference ;)

Don't you own a hammer? ;D
-
looks like a Rm 250 A B C will be the ticket at 205mm

always a last resort Tony ;D
-
The bike is definitely a great example of form following function, so another dent here and there won't make any difference. 8)
Thanks Stewart. Flick me a pm or email if you've got a spare.
-
Don't you own a hammer? ;D I do Tony*, I seem to remember ya pickin on my tool boards rack of engineers ball-pein hammers. :D
*Roughly 120 different sizes and styles That's good for nearly every repair/rebuild/modification/slaughter application ............... ;)
-
;D
Yeah, I think it says a lot about a man when has such a collection of hammers! ;D ;D
-
I have a spare Bultaco kickstarter Tony. May have to alter a lot of stuff but worth doing for the Euro look! ;) +++ J
-
Great idea, Jerry!
If I were to just swap the kick shaft, cases, gearbox, crank, top end, pipe, carb, air box, exhaust, frame, swingarm, forks, wheels, tank and seat it would pretty much bolt straight on!
Thanks a lot. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Wierdo........ :P

put up a picture with a set of verniers across an we will sort it out once and for all, ;) minus kick lever :)
-
Umm, I thought we had sorted it out???
Or are you suggesting oldfart and Doc might be wrong?

Gday Tony, No not saying Doc got it wrong ;) just trying to prove him right, ive had a look at the parts catalogue for the ts250 r,j,k,l and m and all look to use the same coarse spline 19 mm od, checked the later models 1978 are the same and sure the TS250 er kick lever is the same and I agree with Doc that you could use the PE/RM250B,C and the RM370, 400, just didnt want you to end up with 1 that wont fit ;) :)
-
Here we go. All fixed! ;D ;D ;D

Ok, so it's a bit long, but it's interesting that the one off my 1988 DR750 fits. 8)
-
See It wasn't that hard after all .... ;D ;D Psst Dr 400 are shorter and are just the ticket for Tm 250 also.
-
:) :D ;D 8) ;) luv a happy ending
