Title: Coolant for magnesium water pump?
Post by: Racer X on February 21, 2014, 02:18:20 pm
I'm picking up a 1988 CR 500 tomorrow. Apparently these bikes suffer severe water pump casing corrosion due to being made from Magnesium. What's the best coolant to run?

:) I would go for a devcon based one

On a serious note I use a nulon brand  one a concentrate but don't add water.

 :)

This looks good, no water whatsoever in this stuff.

I reckon that is the go.
On a serious note think of "painting" the internal parts of water pump casing with devcon also.
Just to try to cover the magnesium before it is f$cked

Always use distilled water if you use water i have always used a Penrite corrosion inhibitor in my 81 125 since it was new but the 81 has alloy housing so it doesn't suffer as bad and use inhibitor only not anti freeze or boil

The later 80's cases were nowhere near as bad as the earlier ones Paul , the 84's are famous for it and are hard to source , unlike yours which are still very available and interchangeable with later years also I believe.
