Title: Which one of Newtons laws did you try to break?
Post by: Tim754 on February 17, 2014, 03:28:41 pm
Something to ponder during recovery....

First law: When viewed in an inertial reference frame, an object either is at rest or moves at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force.

(think of it as the time you were charging down the steepest track incline, then your carby stuck on wide open, and you remembered the TM's brakes aren't that flash....)

Second law: The vector sum of the forces on an object is equal to the total mass of that object multiplied by the acceleration of the object. In more technical terms, the acceleration of a body is directly proportional to, and in the same direction as, the net force acting on the body, and inversely proportional to its mass. Thus, F = ma, where F is the net force acting on the object, m is the mass of the object and a is the acceleration of the object. Force and acceleration are both vectors (as denoted by the bold type). This means that they have both a magnitude (size) and a direction relative to some reference frame.

(sort of getting run over by a Hodaka Super Rat 100 doing 20kph is far better than being run over by a bus at 100kph...

Third law: When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to that of the first body.

(Ever seen a "Melee"  at a mens basketball match? lots of pushing and shoving but no one ever falls down!  *

* May not apply to professional Soccer.... one finger touch and the opponent needs an stretcher/ambulance/ hearse at least till he gets a penalty kick..

Bit in depth for me but I certainly understand the concept of gravity. I've never fallen up something! J PS I also understand what's its like to be hit by an accelerating projectile! IE football to the back of the head at close range when I was perpetual reserve for Box Hill Adelphians aged 15. Knocked me out for a couple of minutes and probably explains why I'm involved in VMX at my age.

doesn't explain why a small object like a golf ball inflicts 50 times the pain compared to a basket ball when it hits the back of your hand.....

Basketball is very loosely based on sporting pursuits.

Golf is a form of torture.

I don't think I've broken too manyof Newton's laws.

But Murphy's laws? That's a whole different kettle of fish................................

A Bultaco Sherpa S125 cannot fly.  Manjimup downhill 'ski' jump, first MX event following state champ around, he slowed at this jump I just took off landing in a crumpled heap and put the petrol cap through the tank with my puny chest!!!

"Manjimup downhill 'ski' jump,  first MX event following state champ around, he slowed at this jump." That would be Law1

and here be Laws 2 and 3 " I just took off landing in a crumpled heap and put the petrol cap through the tank with my puny chest!!!" ;)

The really frightening part of Murphy's laws is that Murphy was an optimist..................

Murphys combat laws were spot on as well

"a sucking chest wound is natures way of telling you to SLOW DOWN!"

Murphy was not an optimist....He was an optimist with a lot of experience which made him pessimistic  ;)

hmmm - which law did I break when I was 8 years old and jumped off the balcony with an umbrella?

I think racing my last national @ 40 something I broke all of them ..... plus a shite-load of bones.

usually I test the co efficient of friction followed by the mass times acceleration ( acceleration being 9.8 metres per second - gravity)

Yep agreed John and so often tested and found correct.

Remember it's not the fall that kills ya ,it's the sudden stop at the end.... 8)

The sudden stop at the end hasn't killed me yet.....but it has tried several times  ::)
