Title: 84 CR250 Extra Cotters??
Post by: Kenneth S (222) on February 14, 2014, 07:40:47 pm
Hi Guys,

After having gearbox issues with my 84 CR250, with the gears all sorted now, I am rebuilding the engine. Problem is, I have 2 more cotters than are showing in the Owners Manual and Parts Book. The cotters are the ones that sit inside the clutch basket underneath the clutch hub. As far as I can see I should have 2 but I have 4.

Have any of you come across this before? I just can't see how or where these extra two came from or should go.

Hi Kenny, What great value these 84 Hondas are. You get to race them all season and then you get to work on them all off season. Maaaaattttteeeee, that is mega bang for ya buck. 8) 8)

Did you ever get that overheating issue sorted out?

NOS Mechanical seal and took the head stays off and it stopped....then the gear box went. I might actually get to race it in the 3rd season I've owned it.

Mine used to go through dog teeth like nothing. The original head gasket on 1984 CR250s' was aspestos, they changed them to a 3 plate which never seem to hold compression. I had to have a base gasket spacer laser cut about 1mm thick to lower compression so the head gasket wouldn't leak. Good luck.

You don't mean Circlips do you. Cotter pins might be split pins, circlips, or any other type of fencing wire!

Even left with one is going to be scary! Some of those two might live on the inside of the cases!!!!!

Are you talking about the half moon shaped discs/retainers that go under the clutch ? Is there enough room to put the four of them(two per side) under the cupped washer that holds them in place.Measure the thickness of two of them together against the width of the slot they fit into on the shaft.
I just pulled apart a 84CR 500 on the weekend and it only had two of them.If yours are thin maybe it needs four of them. Just guessing.

Yes, that is what I am talking about. There wasn't enough overlap on the retaining washer to hold all 4 in so I followed the parts book and only put 2 back in. Have ridden the bike twice now and the clutch works fine. They are called Cotters in the Parts Book so that's what I'm calling them!
