At the risk of starting another shite fight about forks Col, Dave Tanner has stated that as long as an evo has any OEM drum brake fork on it, it's good to go at the PC's

Looks ugly to me too. Maybe its the side covers? Why they didnt make the frame to take 80 CR plastic is a mystery to me

Its not all about the look of some bikes , some of the ugly ones may out perform ,out handle the pretty bikes out there .
I have seen some nice looking bikes out there , but they don't go or handle as good as they look.
The C&J Looks ok to me  ;) but would like a ride to see how it handles etc

I feel sorry for the armchair / keyboard experts, I have the ex Alan West / Bennett Honda C&J 500
They are one of the best late 70s early 80s Dirtbikes to ride,
Better than an Aberg / HL, miles better than TT600s

Just like our tastes in women, beauty's very much in the eye of the beholder. I happen to like C&J's, I reckon they're far prettier than HL's and most of the other 4 stroke hot rods. No matter what you like there's always someone who'll think it's fugly....... Every special should carry this sticker ;D.

The red ones pretty much the same as the white one....the big differences being the colour and that the white one is an unrestored fike. They're always going to look a bit ordinary when they're  wearing 30 year old patina.

Yes the Red ones go faster, thats why I lashed out on a brand new CR250RZ Tank knowing that will set it off,
Just like BumbleBee Yamaha Flattrackers they just look right.

Some where on the net there is a photo of a C&J XR/XL 185/200
IMO it is one of the best looking and I bet best riding twin shock Thumpers of all time.
Back in 1980, The great Dave Morris helped me build a twin shock XR200 with a White Bros alloy arm, Works Perf Shocks, CR125 forks, the bike was brilliant and it cleaned up many biker bikes at Belmont Club Days. unfortunately the Pro Link was even better, then the IT200 was better again, then something else was better again,

There is one in the UK for sale at the moment.  £6000, absolutely STUNNING. Fresh Rod Spry restoration.  In red.  Bargain.
Look at it or race it.
The white one in the US looks very tired and expensive by comparison.

..............

How about an HPF Honda?  Also rebuilt ready to race and stunning.  Similar money.  You get a lot of bike for your money at the moment.....

Exactly. The look of a bike all comes down to how you want it to look. A lot of the US desert racers were white back in the late 70's and 80's...for some reason they liked them white.

Here's some pics of my hot rod 77 XL420 made to look like the bike Honda could of built with '76 CR250 plastics and a lot of frame tweaks.

Damn, every time I look at the stuff you guys put up .............I agree with Firko, its in the eye of the beholder. I also think along the lines of BigK.....BUT this is no tarted up trailbike Michael, C&J are like SON says, had quick ride on one in the U.S. a long time ago, never liked 4st up to that point, I HATED my xl420, now THAT was a tarted up trailbike!  I have wanted a C&J ever since, I hope this one sells quick. WHAT TANK IS ON THE WHITE BIKE?  Its the only ugly thing on it!

Paint it all red and the same knockers would be drooling over it.
Frame builders never care too much about Number plates, That's the Riders job.
Frame Builders care about Kilos and how the end product works,
and having ridden a C&J framed XL500, I can say they work really well!

Thanks Johhny.... The frame started out as a stock 77 XL350. It went through a lot of modification, particularly the rear loop that I cut and shut to make it a lot narrower and to fit the CR seat and mud guard. All parts bolt on as they should. Put decent foot peg mounts on it. Gusseted the backbone and headstem area and a few other little tweaks. I was going to use a '76 CR frame but when I compared the XL and CR frame, the XL frame looked a lot stronger so I chose it. It wasn't exactly the cheap build I was hoping it would be, but where do you find a C&J pre78 bike for under $7K ?

Just imagine how easy a Husky would start if it had a Honda thumper in it......

I like having something different K and have always loved Honda fourstroke thumpers. They work great when they are set up right. My XL runs at the pointy end in Pre78 at VCM races, and that's with my fat arse on it. It's no longer a trailbike and a whole world away from what Honda gave the public....

White Tank is CR80 twin shock?

79 CR125 SON ;) The twin shock CR80 tank is steel,I have both tank's,tried em both on my 250RZ, The 80 tank looks crap & the 125 tank looks cool on it,the seat needs to be moved forward though as there is a big nut crunching gap between them, and the fuel tap needs relocating to the other side as it hits the pipe :)

Thanks Mick25.....Everything bolts together as it would of from the factory. It takes a bit of time, measuring, measuring and remeasuring, but I think the end result is worth the effort. The swing arm is a White Brothers that I was lucky enough to find while epay surfing for a swing arm for the build. It only took a week to find  ;D

Just buy an aircooled husky 4t, half the weight, twice the power and the worlds best shockers?

just cant see why you would spend $$$ and time trying to make a pig into a whippet when the greyhound is available.

the husky motors make so much better power than all the Honda Yamaha 4 bangers of the time and they sound heaps better (twin pipes were std) :D

this is a sh*tstir post......really

Don't hold back  ;D ;D The husky 510 seem to be rare , I have seen a couple in our club over the years roy gay had a nice one and went like a rocket ship ;) but have heard parts are top dollar for these models  ???.
I know someone that has a 510 for sale but not cheap , I am in the process of building a husky frame to suit the xr,xl 500 donk its coming together good , buts heaps of work and its a mates bike  :P will post some pics up when done in a couple of weeks I hope.

what year frame are you slaughtering??

Its a 1981 husky 250 frame under the knife :o theres plenty of room in these husky frames for engine transplants ;D you could just about squeeze a V twin in there , but all jokes a side the husky frame seems to be easy to fit different tanks , CR125,CR250 1979 , early husky tanks etc , its like they were made for engine and tanks swaps ;D and the frames seem to be made very simple theres only a few brackets on them not like jap bikes.
may need to start a new thread on slaughtering husky frames :o

Ahh, funny flucker..... ;D Air cooled husky 4t's are great, when you actually get to ride them and stop working on them... Was there a 4T suitable for the pre78 era?

I enjoyed the journey of turning my pig (I agree the stock XL350 was a fat pig) into a thoroughbred lean and mean racing machine. It's a hoot to ride, does everything it should and gives all the pre78 2 smokers a decent run for their money.....and no one else has one  8)

Sounds like a great hybrid build Mick......putting the 500 Honda donk into the Husky frame has been done before, there's quite a few of them in the UK......seems they were fast to learn how to make a Husky reliable  :P

It'd be great to see some pics of the build.

Whether you believe the hype or the value is your own perception and how much you pay for a bike,
I can only judge on what I have ridden,
which was winning Heaven 4 stroke Champs on a 510 Husky, and ridden C& J Honda,
and the C & J is as easily as good as the Husky,
and probably a lot easier to live with once set up Properly,
good thing about the Honda Engine, it usually starts before each Race.

Don't let the café husky team in the US see this, they may send a hit squad!

The hit squad still hasn't caught up with Torsten Hallman so I wouldn't be too concerned ;D

Yep cant deny the husky can be a pig to start but once it was sorted it was a 1 or 2 kick affair every time. ol mate crashed his into a dam on his property and dislocated his shoulder... and he dragged it out (after laying unconscious for 2 hrs) and it fired 1st kick... he was by himself and in his words "only had 1 kick in him" so it is possible to get them running well.

I like the cut down and well sorted xl 350's. man did they need a good diet..

All older Honda's were fine and competitive, I raced an XL500SA at a club day as my CR blew it's gearbox. All it had was forks and shocks swapped and lights removed. I was quicker on it than the CR250! (Jilliby with it's 130KMPH straight)
but as far as fun goes I spent less than a grand on this and it was a hoot to ride

the carby was from the 1980 XL/XR 500 HRC kit, the motor was bored to 305cc and a custom cam and larger inlet valve, I ported it my self and made the pipe myself (looks bad but worked well and not too loud)
Alas I sold it, if anyone sees it let me know.

Just goes to show that there is room for hybrids in our competitions. Good bikes can be built relatively cheap and once sorted and or built right from the start, they are more than competitive.

I assembled my own motor apart from having new valve seats, a bigger inlet valve and machining for the roller cam done by a machinist. Oh, and a set of Webster clutch gears made up. I did my own porting as well as made my own pipe and I can honestly say, the bike is FAST and handles really well. It keeps up with the 2st 400's not a problem. Just wish it had a better front brake  :o

The early XL Hondas (73 to 77) are pretty easy to put on a diet. Mine came down to 108kg after the mods were done! Not bad for a 37 y/o four stroke and a hell of a lot easier to live with than a CCM (but i'd still have one) or a Husky.

XL 500 donk in a KLX frame, lot cheaper than C&J. Ive seen one being built and why its not an easy swap it can be done.

I have seen a KLX with the Honda 500 motor in it. Heaps of cutting, bending and welding work is needed to get the big lump in the frame though. I was going to do the same swap myself, but I couldn't find a donor bike that was reasonable enough. I'm happy with how mine turned out.

TBM yours is bloody nice bike. Lots of great attention to detail and the many small things become the whole.
I built a pre 75 XL 250 based bike with a modified standard frame that I got down to the 100kg mark nowhere as tidy as yours but it punted around the track OK.

Thanks Slakewell. Attention to detail is what makes a special look like it come from the factory. And it makes it easy to work on when you know that all the bolts are the correct size for mounting any of the parts. It's one thing to do a rebuild/restoration but it's a whole new game when building a special.
Now I'm thinking of building an EVO legal 500cc 4 stroke. I have a spare 79 CR250 frame and a 81 XR500 motor........

That should be a great build Slakewell. The little XR motors can be made to go pretty quick. Perfect for Vinduro.
I've started on my next project. XR500 in a 1978 CR250 frame. I think I might build this bike for Vinduro....but that might change  :o
