Title: CVT outfits?
Post by: Michael Moore on January 31, 2014, 05:51:54 pm
Are conventional transmissions a requirement, and if not, is anyone known to have tried a snowmobile-style CVT transmission on an outfit?  I looked at the 2013 FIM rules and didn't see any restrictions on transmissions.

I was looking at a photo of an EML twin that was posted here and it made me think of all the powerful liquid-cooled 2T twins that are available from the sleds (like Polaris and Rotax).  Ted Wilkins from Canada had good results using Rotax twin sled motors and CVTs in some hill climbers:

The sled motors could be attached to a non-unit transmission (maybe something like a Baker for a H-D big twin) if a conventional box is needed but they are already set up with the CVTs and those might give better drive once it was tuned for the new operating conditions.

cheers,
Michael

Interesting.
Makes me think of Kim Newcombe
