I've had over twenty Maicos over the years but I lost a lot of photos when Village Photos crashed a year or so ago. Here's a few from now and then........the purple wheel '73 250 and AW400 were both destroyed in separate fires after I sold them. A tragedy of coincidence.

No that was a different bike John. Some of the parts might have swapped between the two but the one you rode was the fluro orange one. The purple one replaced it.

had this since 1986, $395 was on consignment at Drummonds M/C Kempsey, it is still on the original piston , raced a few classic nats on it in the 90's, commuted to work on it (7kms quiet dirt road),still has the 9 feet wide old bars on her, garage queen atm .      g.

Firko,
Who made the pipe on the Purple wheel Maico? Looks like it would have worked well.

Peter Reynolds made it Radar and yes it did, and still does work well. It's on my 350 squarie these days and even though it was made for the 250 it works just as well on the bigger engine.....even though it probably shouldn't :o. You'd know more about that than me ;).

My Maico trials bike based on a 1973 MC250 motocrosser. A lot of work has gone into this bit of history.

I think he might be joking!  Why not do a bit of digging, see what engines are more readily available and that rods/bearings etc are easy to come by. I have some Maico and Rms in the shed and if me i'd be looking at Yam and Honda for parts supplies and engines, cheaper to buy and maintain for sure.

Did you get any 125s in Aus/NZ?  I bought one of the three the local dealer in Albuquerque got in 1972 (and that took months to arrive due to a dock strike).  The other two went to a pair of kids who's father seemed to have decided that trying to build competitive 125 CZs for them was getting much too expensive.  :)  There was a fair number of Pentons, Sachs, Husky, Monark, Bultaco and even a Montesa 125 (the gray tanker) scattered among the Japanese bikes.

It was a nice bike but the engine didn't seem extremely robust.

cheers,
Michael

Only in small numbers Michael. There were very few that actually hit the race track in the day, I can only recall one radial version and it/he a was damn fast. He later raced an RM 125 Suzuki and he didn't show the speed he had on that little Maico.

I do believe I recognize that 250 Wayne, glad to see it all worked out. I never did ask is it a rider or are you setting up the mini museum like Don. If museum you need to work on him for 1 of his 125 maico's or those Yamahas you like of his.

G'day Maurice!

No mate this one is, or will be, a rider!  All are, or will be!  This one should be having a hit out in next few weeks or so, then I really have to get back to assembling my 465.

1975 mc250 used to belong to a mate of mine in hastings club was dismantled after he broke his leg in 1976 still on original bore have not touched it except a few parts of ebay and les to preserve the original gear whilst im riding it

http://s1177.photobucket.com/user/branchy97/media/higleysmaico.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2

this is how it sits and rides as it should have a aw77 frame  considering a swap over into aw with a 400 barrel , love to hear from anyone who has done this conversion with the barrel , maybe a 325?????

Firko.  Brisks Sales in Queensland had two (AW125s) here in 1977.  They had three bikes prepared for Mat Daley to race in 1977.  A 125, a 250 and a 400.  Mat decided to retire instead I bought the 400 mid year 1977, and then got to race the 125 in the 1978 Qld MX Championships at Kilcoy.  The 125 was pretty quick rotary disc valve.  I think I was sixth at Kilcoy.  A C Grader bought the other 125.  Brisks also had two 125 Maico Road Racers for Tommy Gibson at one stage.  They were real nice bikes.

My ex "works" bike: 1973/74 MC125, with alloy swingarm (Reinschüssel), magnesium front- and rear hub, footrest mounting point directly weldet on the frame (not the bolt on stockers), ... etc.
I bought the bike in parts and bad condition on ebay, just because of the "GP-hub" for my 1974 GS250 projekt. And I hadn't even recognized that it was from magnesium because of the bad pictures..  :)
The plan was to keep the goodies and sell the rest. But instead of that I just keeped the rear wheel (DID rim), reassambled the bike and gave it to a friend of mine  :D
