Title: Husky clutch basket / drive gear
Post by: b490 on January 26, 2014, 10:55:51 pm
Looking for  a  good useable clutch basket drive gear assy   to suit '82  500 Husky engine that I am rebuilding for a mate.
  Part # 272 stamped on gear .
I think perhaps 430 or later model 500 baskets would also  fit  if  stamped with same
     part   # 272   ?  ???

 Regards,
                   Steve

Yeah.. had a look last night.. had a clutch basket gear with 272 stamped on it..but small gear on back wasn't fantastic... only other gear that may suit that arrangement had 885 (I think) stamped on it.. nothing with a matching 272 on it..

I will have a look to see what I have got in my shed , if I get a chance. Those clutch baskets always wear out the small gear on the back, if the needle roller bearing for the kickstart idler gear isn't changed regularly. I used a TE510 clutch basket in my CR500, as it has the same size small gear on the back of the basket . The TE510 basket has more teeth on the ring-gear though, so you need to change the primary drive gear as well . I found that it also made my 500 easier to start, as it gave more revolutions of the motor compared to the stroke of the kickstarter and should work well if you use one of those decompressors in the head.  Using the 510 clutch basket, you also have to change your final drive gearing to suit , as well.
