Title: Coaching - QLD
Post by: Charlie B on January 23, 2014, 12:04:06 am
Hi all

I am venturing into the world of VMX and excited to do so..... however being "older" (40 something), and not as bullet proof as I was in my teens..... I am thinking that some practice and coaching would not be lost on me.

Can anyone recommend any good coaches / practice tracks etc..... (Brisbane / SE Queensland based)

Thanks
Charlie

If you ring up Motorcycling Qld they can put you in touch with a host of coaches, they have riding schools all the time. In the near future I may get a well know former coach to run a school for VMXers....I will keep you posted.

This brings up an interesting subject.  Just going to any coach and being included in their school somehow wouldn't work.

How many riders would be interested in a School/s run just for Vintage Riders on a Vintage friendly track.

I had the idea of doing this a couple of months back and forgot about it.  I have a coach or two in mind and venues wouldn't be that hard to arrange.  You can get anywhere licenced for coaching.

Who is interested?

Kevin (KTM47) PM if you want to

12 months or so now we had a coach/practise motard day at nudgee track thru mc sportsmans..
wasn't difficult to arrange insurance etc etc...
hardest part was getting hold of the then president n hiring track...
which puts money back into the club..
this could maybe be "free" track hire... (just athought) if it was a working bee in morning coach/ride in arvo,,, as first you would have to find the track... its a tad overgrown...
just puttin it out there...

Sounds like a great idea. I was planning to get coaching from Jody Herson, the MX coach at Brisbane's Fort Lytton MX Club.
I would much prefer to be with my VMX mates.
Add me to the list :)

Cheers

I would love to get coaching in NSW.
I was thinking of going to race pace next time my son does but you sort of ride VMX bikes different to moderns.  At least I think you do :)

Hi all. I am a level 2 coach living in Dalby. If I got the interest I would love to run & vintage only school. I would need to work out finner details.

I have made some tentative inquiries and already have a couple of possible venues.  The next thing is coaches.  I think everyone would prefer older coaches, but we may have to settle for some in the 30s.

I will keep everyone informed.

I'm talking about the SEQ(Brisbane) area, so I think there is a possibility of other people ding something similar in other States.

Sounds positive... can you offer us some info on:

- what sort of numbers would you need?
- would coaching location be Dalby, or else where? (track VMX friendly?)
- what format would a coaching take / look like?
- when would you be available?
- what group rate should interested parties budget for?
- how many hours coaching would this buy? (just thinking Dalby is a bit of a trip so need to make it worth the time invested for all - yourself included of course)

look forward to your thoughts

Charlie

Be patient.  However it sounds like some are keen to do something very soon.  Give me the weekend to sort something.

It sounding good guys.  An older coach might be more simpathetic to lack of fitness and aches and pains (although I'm working on the fitness part  ;D )

I'm sure we could scrape together 15 riders.  Between QVMX and BMCC there are a lot of members (and that's only the clubs).

The Vintage track at QMP would be nice.  Good practice for some of the QVMX rounds  :-\

As I said I travel. Brisbane is no problem, give me a chance to catch up with Mum.Tell me where & when & we can go from there. It is always handy to have a couple of coaches if you have someone in mind. I am more than willing to be an assistant coach. I actually realy like working with other coaches.

Coaching was the best birthday present I ever given when Jim Pomeroy ran the class at Coles Creek on the Saturday before a raceday, so much fun with a  personal touch from a great man.

Ok Here is what I can say so far.

I have contacted a level 2 coach, who is still a current Pro Grade Motocrosser.  He is in his 30s and has been a personal trainer, so he understands different levels of fitness.

At this stage looking at a one day school probably a Sunday.

Cost about $120/140 per rider plus extra if need MA licence.

I have three venues in mind (on southside of Brisbane), all are Vintage friendly two of them are current VMX tracks.

I would like to gauge what dates the majority would prefer.

Sunday 2 Feb (if this is everyone's preferred date we need to get moving)
Sunday 9 Feb
Sunday 23 Feb  Etc

Please let me know if anyone would prefer a Saturday instead.

Email me at [email protected] or post here or PM

Kevin, nice work, thanks for arranging this.

There has been a bit of interest and I suspect there will be more than 1 or 2 group coaching sessions over time.

Please confirm if there are minimum numbers required for the sessions you propose.

I am taking the liberty to add, a) availability schedule to help decision making, b) a poll to help determine areas of coaching interest to help tailor the program.

Date preferences:

1. Charlie - available 2,9, 23 Feb (would prefer Saturday if possible)

Brisbane Motorcycle Club ( BMCC ) are having their club sign on day on Sunday 23rd Feb at the Nudgee track as well as trophy presentations from the 2013 Club Championship. This is the first club day of the year for existing or new members to join for 2014, so this date might have some impact on riders for the 23rd Feb coaching date.

Again if everyone prefers Saturdays that can be arranged.  The 22 Feb might be better than 23rd etc.  I avoided 16 Feb because that is QVMX sign on etc.  Either way I need to get some concenus so I can start to finalise.

At this stage there isn't a minimum set, but maximum with one coach is 15.

As for what to teach I think the level of the riders involved will dictate that but I'm sure that can all be worked out.  I'm sure if the majority of riders want something special that can occur, but if someone need help in one area that can also be worked out.

I will post more details soon.

Barry Surawski will be the coach.  We will get extra coaches if needed.  Barry is a level 2 MA coach and still a current Pro Grade rider.  Barry has also worked as a personal trainer so he will include fitness and eating tips as well.

Ummm no - that's where NOT to put a tent peg.  ;D ;D ;D

I am also available for tuition on how NOT to mount a gear lever.  Or depending if you just want to use first and neutral - how to mount it that way  ;)

Later in the month would suit me.  2 Feb is a bit too soon ... Need to get bikes prepped for the year ASAP.  Check gear level position, tyre pressures etc... ::)

I can offer a course on how to remove a rear tube to check if you have a leaky valve - does that help anyone  :o :o  I can alos offer assistance in how to jettison weight from the bike mid race by getting rid of the rear brake lever and brake rod  ;)

At least I can now say I have participated rather than just being a spectator.
Many thanks T for looking after me, with the shade and unloading and loading of my bike.
Thanks to Kev, Barry and Greg for the day.
Charlie, nice little race set up you have there. (Bikes, trailer etc) well organised!
Note to self, less oil in the fuel and more padding in the seat of the RM.  :o
