Title: YZ PLASTICS What do you want?
Post by: vmxplastics on June 11, 2008, 07:26:36 pm
Hi all
Scott from VMX Plastics here.
We need your help.
What plastics do you want for your yamahas.
We are about to start new tooling and thought we should ask what you would like.
Please let us know.
Thanks
Scott vmxplastics

Scott,
I won't whore up this thread with stuff you've already heard from me, but something that I reckon would have a market (including me!) is plastic YZ125C/X fuel tanks.

It's a fair list, I've been waiting for you to ask this question  :) :

I underline the other guys requirements for 80/81 - 125/250/465 plastics (all).  The white 465 tank is not the same as any of the others and nobody currently makes the euro model.  XYZ make the 250/465 but the white for the 465 is the same as the 250 I think.  The Euro 465 had a bigger tank.
Other parts that are hard to find for these things are the the "mudguard" opaque panel that goes over the airbox - apparently these broke from brand new, so there would be a fair market I would say.  Fits 250 and 465 for '80 and '81. You can ask anyone that has looked for one how hard they are to find new (or even good second hand).  I just know cyclegod is going to find one on Ebay now to make a goose out of me.  He does that.
Airbox for '81 250/465 - they had a cast in threaded brass piece on the RHS that notoriously cracked out.  If you can find one that isn't cracked it probably has holes drilled in it everywhere as a "performance mod".
Shock spring guide - opaque tube that goes over the shock - fits a stack of models.
Side covers and guards for YZ50 (mostly all the same).  These are a very popular little bike.  Some yellow NOS available from US, but Euro white is impossible.  Probably not a big market for YZ80 of these years, but I would love it you made for that model too :D.

Looking back over this thread I've really covered the whole G/H series haven't I ??

I've got an NOS YZ125H number plate and YZ100H LH sidecover if that helps.

Sorry you asked yet ??

Scott, I'm sure what ever plastics you decide to make wont please everyone (I dont mean quality) but at least your giving it a shot. At the end of the day I surpose the the YZ-A/B plastics and the YZ-G/H plastics would be the smart money.
Good luck with what ever plastics you make and I think it's great that someone is making true repro YZ plastics.

Fuel tanks 125de 250 400de
Front and rear guards 125 250 400 def
Now after some input. We will do G H and miss the 125 250 400 f side plates and tank
Thanks all
Keep the suggestions coming

Hi All
Thanks for your comments.
We are working hard to complete the plastics we have started.
We now have YZ 125 250 400 D E F front guards.
We have 125 D E F rear guards.
Our 250 400 D E F rear guards are not acceptable for resale yet.
We are going overseas this month August to finalise  our tooling for side panels 125 D E   Side panels 250 400 D E.
Also 125 250 and 400 D E fuel tanks.
All these product will be available December or January.
Once these are complete we will evaluate there performance in the market.
From that we can make a decision on witch direction to head.
We desperately need distribution in USA and Europe if anyone can help please let us know.
This has been a protracted process and costly, we will complete all the above at any cost so at least some old YZs can look as the where designed to look.

The process isn't a two week turnaround. The way Scott's doing them means getting proper tools made up which requires quite a bit of time (and lots of money).

The stuff he does have available:
YZ and IT 125 250 400 D E F front guards,
We have 125 D E F rear guards,
Front number plate,
...can be purchased on Ebay.

I've already bought several of each of them and had no dramas with either the product or the service - in fact the service has been so good that I've linked his websites in my forum signature.  ;)

Nathan, is it as good as it promises, new NOS? I've brought several pieces from other suppliers/manufacturers and I've been quite diappointed in the detail.

He started this because he bought some aftermarket plastics for one of his VMX bikes and was disgusted by the quality - You will not be disappointed. Scott only advertises them as 99% because he assumes that most people are as uptight about details as he is. ;)

Remember that we're talking about a bloke who has identified thirteen different shades of black on a YZ-A... and who has made the effort to get them all right on his own bike.

I would (and will and do) recommend his palstics to any YZ owner.

That's what I thought the situation was. I can't blame him. Some of the detail I've recieved I've thought "why did they bother?" :(. I'm certain some of the stuff I'ver seen is not lack of techology or even the cost of tooling etc, it seems just plain laziness and the lack of 'giving a damn'.

Although I'm appreciative of getting plastics I'm still thinking "this is about $1 worth of plastic and I'm been charged $60-80 ::) - there's plenty of room for profit and all those other justifications. For the want of a little effort I'm sure we could get greater quality for the same price. Obviously that's what Scott saw as well. More the power to him. I hope he has some early MX plastic shortly. I'll hang out for them on the promise and in hope.

We are working on the completion of the YZ D E models
If sales lift we will continue with other model
We have a distributor in the USA now and with some luck sales will increase.
We are way behind on return on investment at the moment however we are confidant things will begin to happen once we have all plastic parts for one model.
Any way at least all YZ D E F will have the best guards and tanks in the world and all from OZ.
Thanks

on the topic of pre~75 front guards,
AMS do a nice YZa/b front in yellow or white but not the silver [on right side of pic].
can't talk for the yellow but i've been running the white front on two of my bikes and i love em.
but i could always do with more ;D

Vandy thats all good for racing and I dont doubt that you have had good experiences with AMS, but I have to say that maier reproduction plastics arent in the same ballpark as your own countrymans' (Scott Wilson) VMX Plastics, and I say that because of not only the quality of the plastic but the look and shape of the products he makes. It is exactly the same as yamaha themselves. No more do we yamaha folk have to put up with after-market plastic being the wrong shape, the wrong colour, the wrong gloss level and the wrong look in general.
Here is a bloke that is now producing plastics for yamahas that (you/or anyone) would be very hard pressed to tell the difference between genuine NOS Yamaha plastics and VMX Plastics. I wouldnt hesitate in recommending them to anyone and that would include the most anal of concourse restorers whos bikes only ever get close to dirt is when the maid cleans the fireplace out.

Brings about a dilemna though.  Does a man wait for plastics that may not be made or buy the crap ones.  Hope I'm not hijacking - I imagine others on here are in the same situation  ::)

That would be the "HMS Waiting" boat Tony and I'm sitting at the bar enjoying a cold one, best ya join me. Lets hope that we dont have to wait long but if we do Im sure the wait will be worth it and if the boat never comes in, will, as the old saying goes, "ride what you have", or at least invest in beer bottle glasses as they always paint a rosy picture.  ;)  ;D

Gee, talk about impatient. Da Man is just doing his market research and said he's gonna do a matrix, presumablly to work out a cost/profit ratio/break even point. Give Da Man a break :P.

I think you can judge the man by his product in this case ;). If Scott make the undertaking I'll bet you see them in quick order, no excuses and a NOS quality product ;) :). For our skae, let's hope the nmbers add up.

Yeah I know all that and I'm certainly not questioning his product, or his commitment (or his parentage ;D)
Yes, I probably am being impatient as my resto is close to completion apart from the obvious sidecovers.  There's also a certain new number plate that I'd like to replace, but I dare not mention that.
I'd be prepared to buy double the quantity of VMX plastic if it made a difference ::).

Anyway - I'm off to the bar on the "HMS Waiting".  I think DJ said he was shouting  ;D ;D ;)

$99.99 with $25 postage. Bargain!
I will wait until he has his tanks for sale before I buy a tank.
And hopefully he will also have the sidecovers too this year.

Im with you Freaky, there is a real need for top notch plastics for the early YZ/MX A.B.C  models, Scott has produced perfect front number boards(so we dont av to fork out $200 us for a nos paint lid !! ) as for the  near impossible to find YZ250/360a side plates (basic ovals) The other really popular hard to find(then brawl over)Yamaha plastics would have to be   YZ 1980 1981 G H models front number board white or yellow followed by the incredibly shy white side panels for  YZ 125/250/465..G H  ....anyway just my 2c worth and im only suggesting these as they are very hard to find, then hard to pay for !!!  via the  empire !!

Well rox thats the only reason i metioned it, i know its all set up but surely rather than continue to hope you can sell the other def stuff thats not that hard to get, why wouldnt you be doing the early YZ,MX a/b stuff, im sure you wold sell double what you would the other gear and there are as you say failry easy shapes.  take the front guards or rear on the a-b series ? you have to be able to move a few hundred of them if they were reasonable priced and even if you had to do a large run you would never loose money if you had to sit on them for a while they would go OS as well if they were any good ( same with the Exchange rate)  Im just not seeing much progress down that path .  seem like a missed opp to me.

Scott,

Vaccum formed or injection moulding? Do you need NOS stuff to copy?

Forgive me if I repeat what others have said.

YZ125F Sidecovers               I have a NOS exhaust and rear plate, but not airbox, to copy.
YZ250/400F Sidecovers         I have NOS exhaust to copy
YZ250/465G Sidecovers         I have a very good used set to copy
YZ125/250/465G Front guard  I have a good one to copy
YZ250/400E Sidecovers         I have NOS set to copy
YZ125/250/400E Front Plate   I have almost new one to copy.
YZ125G Sidecovers & rear guard
YZ80H rear guard

PM me if you want any of these to copy.

I'm not Scott, but his stuff is injection moulded. Probably best not to repeat his words on the quality of vacuum formed bits...

The simple version is that the molds cost a motza, and it takes time to get them to a decent standard. Add in hassles with the D/E tanks, a GFC and his other business interests, and it takes even longer.

The early model stuff is next, and I think that G/H is next after that.

C'mon Hairdo, you could have taken any of a million better, easy pay-outs on Mr Lawes than a simple jibe about his scruffy looking bike.
 ;D

I think that the 125D/E side covers are already in the works - Scott W had been trying to get all of the D/E plastics sorted before moving onto other age bikes - and that included tanks and sidecovers. I think they were going to make the RHS cover in D-spec, with the markings to cut/drill for the extra mount for the E.

jeez Nathan, such horrible insults coming from someone with a bouffant, who sits around eating le-snacks while everyone else is drinking beer and eating manly food ;D

Seriously though I wasn't really having a dig at Lawsy, his bike is actually pretty neat when you have a look at it. Whoever had it before must have looked after it, cause i don't think it's been restored?

What I was getting at was that we've now got another guy who started out just wanting to get in a bit of racing, but it looks like the dark side has gotten hold of him, and he's becoming a restorer as well.

I know this thread is old but I'm just wondering if you there is enough call to produce some yz 80 plastics from mid 80's?
Front and rear mud guards are fairly interchangeable and fit most models through the 80's. I'm pretty sure theres only 2 tanks from 83-89 and im pretty sure theres only 2 different side cover sets in that same year period. If you do I'd take a ful 86 yz80 s kit.
Cheers,
Chris
