Okay I've finally managed to wrangle an XS650 donk out of my brothers stash and the plan is to shoehorn it into a DR500 frame for the Classic Twins class.
Carlos has signed on as test pilot by the way.
As soon as I make a start I'll post some progress photos.

Welcome to the dark side Steve. I have a mental picture of Crazy Carlos manhandling the beast and it's very funny, very ugly and very fast ;D.

Me too Firko, I was initially looking for a GR650 Suzuki engine but had a brainwave at 3am this morning during one of my all too regular insomnia episodes, I do some of my best & worst thinking during these times.
A phone call this morning and the deal was done but I've got a feeling it'll cost me somewhere down the line.
I'll eventually ride it but one more OP to go first.

Steve you and Carlos are welcome to check out my Mule XS650 chassis and copy my Jemco pipes as well

With budgetary constraints probably ruling out any craft built frames, I reckon you should look into using a stock XS650 frame Steve. The Yanks use them quite a lot and once the street crapola is removed and the steering head bought in to 25-26 degrees they work quite well. It'd save you a lot of cutting and shutting and best of all...the motor bolts tight in ;D.

There ya go, they reckon a day's wasted if you don't learn at least one new thing ;D. We need to encourage Slideys project if only to get the great Carl Askew back in the mix. I've got some doo-dads and gizmo's to donate if the project looks to be a starter.

Thanks for the input gents but it's def going in the DR because it's totally complete and already set up for DT and I had it to a point where I was happy with the way it handled, the 500 is a fair lump of steel anyway and Carlos is 20 kegs lighter than me.
It'll be just for the Classic Twins class, I'm already planning Pre65 and Slider projects for the Classic titles.
It's def a starter Firko, I pick the engine up next weekend and Carlos is back on the Dragbike in a few weeks so he'll be dialled in for this beast, if only off the start line.
I'll take you up on the offer Graeme to check out the pipe set up when I'm up to that point.

500 bucks seems to be a lot of money for a bog stock frame Jimmy. Steve, if we can ever convince you that the stock frame route is the easiest and best way to go, it might be worth giving Herb Conlon a ring, he's got a shed full of XS stuff.

Agreed Firko the 77 bike is a pearler, mine won't look anything like that but it'll be competitive.
