I've got a nice chrome rim that is only spoiled by one fairly significant flat spot.
Is it possible to re-roll them, the way that car wheels can be re-rolled?
Or another method?
The chrome is good, and I want to keep it that way, so I figure that anything using heat will be a bad idea.
And, just out of interest, does anyone know of a way of getting flat-spots out of alloy mudcatcher rims?
I've got a pretty average looking Borani mudcatcher, but don't want to throw it out if its fixable.

when i used to work at spoked wheel repairs when it was in oatley(original owner len leadbrook) he used to have a peice of wood shaped like the outside of the wheel.he then bashed it with a rubber hammer till it got rid of the flat spot.this was done with the spokes still attatched.mine you this was in the 70s.

We used to use a similar technique when I worked in a bike shop in the early 80's. Only difference being we used to use a lead "lump hammer" to hit the wooden block. The lump hammer being a lot heavier than a rubber mallet required very few hits to knock even the biggest ding out of a rim.
You can use a similar technique on alloy rims, however, alloy rims will work harden if you hit them too often and do have a tendancy to crack. I have seen alloy rims straightened in a hydraulic press using appropriate wooden blocks/formers, but the guy I knew who used too do it admitted that it was not an easy job.

yes they can be re rolled like car rims had to get the rims on my crf re rolled just talk to your nearest bike store the can be sent off

Next time someone tells you they are going to re-roll a rim, ask them to show you this mysterious "re-rolling" machine.... it will look suspiciously like a big hammer. Rims are rolled from new out of flat stock but you can't re roll a rim.
