So I picked up a complete 1984 RM500 frontend, forks, triples and wheel. I'm in the process of swapping out the frontend and ran into a snag. The steering stem is short. I had my 1979 400's stem pressed into the RM500's lower triple clamp, still to short. Am I missing something? Do I need a different stem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ralph.

It should be long enough. I did a similar thing with an 83 500 front end and used a 250T stem. You will have to lower the small shoulder on the stem by about 7mm to allow the bearing races to sit lower on the stem- replacement roller bearings used in mine.
