woulds a pvl ign  outa a 79 250  work in a 82 490

assuming you are talking about an analog unit i would not think so Paul as the advance curve would be different between a big bore and a 250.

check the penton racing site for compatibility. email sent mate.

    The ignition will fit the engine, but there could be a starting issue with the system because of the stator assembly. Is the '81 machine a 250 or an open class engine?
 
    The 250 systems use a 4K stator and the open class engine systems use a 5K stator because they don't spin as fast when kicked over.
 
    If you use the fine wire type spark plugs and gap the spark plug at about .022", it may work.

No they will not fit as the taper on the crank shaft is different on the 250 to the 490.
I am sure pvl part numbers are different from the 250 to 490 also.
