A COMPETITOR in the Finke Desert Race in the Northern Territory has died after his motorcycle struck a tree.
Alice Springs police and rally organisers confirmed the motorcyclist, 37, died following the crash, 130km south of Alice Springs, about 2.30pm (ACST) today.
Police said no further details were available.
The Finke Desert Race is an annual two-day, off-road, multi-terrain race through the desert country between Alice Springs and the Aputula community in the Finke Desert, in the territory's south.
This year's is the 33rd race

Apparently from Queensland he was only 2 riders ahead from our entered team . He hit a tree.

It is a real shame; I'm sure we all feel for his friends and family.
Not a good weekend, I think I heard of four road bike deaths (Qld area?) on this mornings news so can we expect another pasting from the media?

the finke is an event i'd love to do even if only the once,
i'm sure this guy was enjoying himself up to the point of his final moment.
