Title: VMX Issue #56 is nearly here!
Post by: AjayVMX on December 16, 2013, 01:24:05 pm
WHAT!  Yes, that's right, VMX Issue #56 is nearly here.  OK, we ran a little late this year with issues #54 and #55 (about a month) but we decided that we should make the effort and get back to our normal schedule, well as least as close as possible  ;)

So as is stands right now, we are planning to mail out subscribers copies in Australia this Friday.  USA Subscribers issues will be airfreighted to the USA and mailed out directly within the USA in early January.

Here's the cover:

(http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af11/AjayTele/VMX/VMX56FrontCover_zps87211eed.jpg) (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/AjayTele/media/VMX/VMX56FrontCover_zps87211eed.jpg.html)

And if you aren't a subscriber and would like to buy this issue, we have a slightly discounted pre-sale happening on ebay.

VMX would like to wish everyone a very Merry VMXmas and a Happy New Year!

With all the choices around Auz next year I hope VMX announces where and when Classic Dirt will be. This year has shown money, time off work etc is budgeted and if left to late to announce we could have another cancelled event and that would be sad.

I think some people think they know more about Classic Dirt than we do.  I can assure those people that they do not and that no decision has been made about whether it will be run again in 2014, at this stage.  If anyone says anything different, they are lying.  ::)

If a decision to run Classic Dirt is made, we will announce it at the appropriate time.  ;)

Yep VMX Issue #56 is in the Aussie Post system as of 12 noon today.  Due to the vagaries of Christmas, it may not appear on the newsagent shelves until as late as 2nd January.  Hopefully the post will do better than that!

MQ's 2014 events calendar lists CD 10 at Green Park Connondale on June 20 - 22. Qld Classic MX champs are on at Harrisville the week prior. Connondale Classic listed as 9/10 August. If true then shaping up as another fabulous VMX season for us Qlders  8)

It's going to be the biggest year ever PEZ.....start saving your money.....arghhh, Queensland, beautiful one day....perfect the next.... ;D....as that Steppenwolf song goes.....get your motor running, head out on the highway....looking for adventure.....LOL.....maybe AJ can play the song for us next time we see him. 8). We might have to look into storing bikes for the southerners so they can just fly in/fly out. :)

I again stress that Classic Dirt 10 is NOT on at this stage and if it's on any web site, that is incorrect as no decision has been taken.  ::)

Where's Jeff-VMX42 when I need him? :).....I'd like to discuss that cover bikes country of origin, it smells like Holland but I can't see a clog or a tulip anywhere in the shot so do I read the cover correctly that it's a Kiwi? Jeez I hope it's not one of those twin shock conversion things :-\

I just got my copy of #56 and after rushing straight into page 6 can happily report that the cover girl is not one of those Dutch monstrosities and is in fact a pretty cool custom framed special. Seeing that it's 40+ degrees outside, I'll put the aircon on, pour a cold drink and spread out on the couch with my dwarf hound and spend the arvo reading VMX 56 from cover to cover.
Retirement certainly has its advantages ;D

Any one rung the contact at Conondale in there advert for classic dirt? Interesting to see why they have a contact and Ay Jay says not on thought of yet?

No news in VMX Mike. I don't know what to tell you now, I thought it'd be announced by now as it was pretty much out there at the Nats in November. I'm sure that if the boys were on top of it there'd be an announcement.
CD10 announcement aside, It's a great issue. The twin shock 465 Yamaha cover bike is a great bit of kit as is the home made mini Maico but I especially love the 250 Yamaha Ascot. I once owned a Yamaha DS2 and I'd love another in Ascot trim......beautiful. Once again the boys have done a great job.

Got mine yesterday in sunny Qld.....will read it over Christmas....that YZ/Maygo/ twinshock thing doesn't do it for me...the guy's done a great job but at the end of the day where does it fit in?.....I guess one day we may have a "hotrod" class in VMX for the orphan Annies. Personally, I would rather see the build up of Goof's RM500 and the like than something that's a nothing....it's not like it's a prototype that never got produced back in the day. Just my opinion....still the best VMX mag in the world. 8)

Agree DC it does nothing for me either. I admire the craftsmanship for sure. It certainly is not vintage but it is a homage to the era. Guess it raises the question about what percentage of parts available back in the day does a recreation need be considered kosher? How long is a piece of string...  ;) Guess that makes me an old fart  ::)

I don't care if it 'fits in anywhere', there are plenty of race classes with bikes that comply, I see it as a quest for the perfect dirtbike, simplicity with aircooling, no power valves, no linkages. Big horsepower with 500cc 2-stroke, the best Maico handling and unique styling.  After building my own KX/KDX400 (when it had the front disc on), I can appreciate it, my Kawa hybrid is about everything I want in a bike, that Moto Kiwi is the same.

Just had a quick flick through it  :) will read it properly later .

Read the cover story and to be honest i dont get it  ???

So the bloke buys an 81 YZ465 , gets Jeff cole to build a frame with 81 Maico geometry $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ , a top tuner to build him a better motor than stock $$$$$$$$$$$, a CNC company to make all the trick bits $$$$$$$$$$$$ , an exhaust specialist to make a RH pipe to suit the frame , Landrus to build a swinging arm as the Jeff Cole one didn't suit $$$$$$$$$$$$$$  and probably a very very long wait .

Then the Craftsman builder bolts it all together with the Yamaha wheels and forks and some new Ohlins . He knocks up some fibreglass panels (probably useless on a race bike ) and its VMX cover material  ::)

Only my opinion of course but to me its a very expensive nothing bike  :)

I'm with you Billy boy on the cover bike......where does it fit in?......and the irony of it all is it will never do a lap of a race track in anger.....like all those Harley custom shitboxes that people spend a 100K on, ride them round the block once, realise there motorbike building skills are zilch (the cheque book builder) and then put it on ebay for a third of what it owes them.....to me, building the bike is the first high and actually racing/riding it is the second high and with that comes satisfaction......to me, old mate with the MaygoZed took what they say is the best bike in it's class [Maico 490,EVO open] and turned it into an ordinary bike all with the help of probably 20 grand?.....I would hate to see what he would do to a classic car.

I like it. It hasnt been ridden by someone else, it hasnt been raced by someone else. Its HIS bike and is just beautiful, he has built it himself, the guy has BALLS as well as money, it might not be practicle and he could have had something else  but it is HIS...built his OWN bike, this sort of thing should be encouraged, without free thinkers daring to be different it'd be a boring world, for starters what about all those after-market frame builders a lot of people get excited about, they wouldnt even exist. The only negative i can see, well two actually, the fibre glass and its not this side of the ditch so i can have a ride, BLOODY WELL DONE IT SAY.

Ok the bike would fit into the Twin Shock class in the UK.  That is what they do over there.  They take good single shock bikes and make them into twin shocks.  Racebase will sell you a Maico (correct spelling not F@#%ing Maygo or Maico breako) based frame that is setup to take different engines, eg RM 465/500, CR 480/500, YZ 465/490, TT500 etc.  I'm sure there are also other bits available without having them custom made.  So the bike this guy has built with a JAPCRAP engine could be made/assembled from bits readily available in the UK for probably half the price it cost him.

As for the story, well it is something different and people are talking about it so it must be working.

Also of interest in the UK and Europe they appear to have Twin Shock class and what they call EVO.  There EVO appears to be  broken into two classes Pre 90 and dare I say it Pre 95.  I still consider this to be a positive post.
