Title: How to identify a 99 or 00 RM125 (Sorry Not VMX)
Post by: BAHNZY on June 06, 2008, 05:20:26 pm
Sorry it's not a VMX question, but I'm in the deep end and need help and i'm sure there is someone that can help.  I bought a RM125 (99 or 00) from a dealer earlier this year and whilst i have taken care of the little yellow monster, it has seized the bottom end. In the quest to re-build the engine i need to clearly understand what year the bike is. Easy you would think, but...  the bike appears to be a Japanese import that does not have the global 17 digit VIN system rather a serial number that means nothing to me or any Suzuki dealer that i have contacted, In fact as soon as i mention "Japanese Domestic", they shrug their shoulders. I am also taking a guess that along the way the bike has been frankenstiened with a different engine as the engine number also makes no sence. Checking the web for spec's, brochures etc, the bikes appear to be identical except the piston, the bit that need. Does anyone have an idea of what the specific differences are between the 1999 and 2000 RM125. By the way the bike has a one industries seat/graphic kit so the visual ID from the graphics is out the door.

I don't think you will loose much sleep rebuilding one. With some road models(NSR/KR/RGV/TZR) the JDM was sold in a 'restricted' form mainly taking the form of a retard of the igniton to keep them below 45hp.I doubt you will have the same problem, but if you do just swap the CDI.

does it have rim dates on it  ???
if it has original rims they should be dated like 8 99
which would make it a 2000 model
rims are always dated the year prior to the correct model date
if it has no dates you might be screwed ;D

the easiest thing to do with the modern suzukis is ring a suzuki dealer and quote the frame number. you can then be 100% sure its correct and dont have to be only half sure if what an online website with frame and engine numbers is correct or not.

Hey Bahnsy, we had a new RM125 2000 model, it seized the big end after a few hours and we found out it was a common problem with 2000 models as the oil slot or whatever it is that alows oil to the big end bearing was too small. Suzuki fixed ours under warranty with a bit of shirt front action from big Kenny.
Peoples 2000 models were shittin themselves everywhere back then.
the 2000 model Had Grey down the side of the seat.. email me a photo of yours to [email protected]  JimmyB
