Not particually into Yammies, but funny thing happened in the last week. I now own 2!! First one is a 79 YZ 125, Fairly complete, but wants a full resto
The other was advertised as an 83 yz 490. Turned out to be an 82!! Oh well, the price was right, and I got to test ride it down the road!! Pretty tidy for an old unrestored bike. Even the chamber is dent free!! Fork seals need doing and the float has a hole in it (brass) but it is all there.
Are the 82's any good?? Always wanted a big bore Yammie

NOpe! Yamahas suck! especially the 1982 Yz490, I spent the whole year chasing about 6 of them on my 430 Husky, I rode the wheels off mine and they still beat me!!! bloody Husky was NOT in same race. They are a seriously good big bore, feel big too, go like stink and, well, flog 430 Husky riders!
Enjoy the 490, hope you have a young bloke to ride the 125, I never got along with those!
cheers,

My 430 Husky had no problems beating YZ490's or anything else for that matter a few years back. Probably should have kept that one.

Had an "82 490J new. Good solid bike, no real issues but was a bit soft in the rear with that funny linkage set up. Took me a while to get used to having a 4 speed which seemed wide ratio compared to the 5 speed 465G i had prior to that. After saying all that, i now have an "83K 490 [30 years later] & fitted a 5 speed so i dunno, not sure what that says--no hope. Cheers.

& more--had a "79 YZ125F [running on methanol] Alky--shell racing spirit special, purple in color. Enjoyed that bike too. Depressing remembering all the bikes i wish i still had. Cheers.

To add insult to injury BigK, after a year chasing them i swapped to RM465Z, no problem beating the same guys on their next years yz, i was stunned how good the z was, still is for that matter, or would be if i get it back together!

I think Huskies are a "fit" and they seem to fit my style. I much prefer them over the orientals.
