Title: Linda Rondstadt Parkinsons disease.
Post by: firko on November 21, 2013, 10:15:15 pm
I had a humungous crush on Linda Ronstadt back in the 70's and still play her music when I'm in a kick back mood, her version of Kate and Anna McGarrigles 'Heart Like a Wheel' still gives me goose bumps. I know it's probably old news but I just read that she's suffering with Parkinsons disease. Sometimes life just isn't fair...............

The first album I ever bought was Linda Ronstadt.  Thought she was a honey.

Re other celebrities with PD, I guess you might know about:
Billy Connelly  (announced around two months back)
Sir Anthony Hopkins
Bob Hoskins
Joyce Jacobs (Esme Watson on A Country Practice)
and of course Muhammad Ali and MJ Fox

And regarding non-celebrities who havePD but really don't deserve it, I just had lunch today with a girl who is 23 years of age and got it to quite an advanced level, been on PD drugs since she was 19 and who first showed symptoms when she was 12.  Now that is a tragedy.

Richo, where are you based?  Our lunchtime discussion today was about there not being enough nurses around with Parkinsons knowledge - and we need nurses as there aren't nearly enough neurologists

I remember going to a concert of hers at the MCG. I was a fair way off from the stage but had my binoculars, yey. The guy next to me asked if he could have a go of them, then the guy next to him & so on. It was an hour later I got them back! Great girl, sad stuff.

I lost a good friend to Parkinson's when she was in her late thirties and sadly remember the slow downfall and agonising effect the disease had on the great Roy East.  Thankfully great people like Michael J Fox and Linda Ronstadt can bring this horrible disease more into the public domain.

This is a great retrospect interview with Linda Ronstadt, I'd almost forgotten just how pretty she was :)........  http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2013/10/03/linda-ronstadt-interview-long-long-time-simple-dreams-2/#sthash.hfhMloBR.zcT1B4q7.dpbs (http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2013/10/03/linda-ronstadt-interview-long-long-time-simple-dreams-2/#sthash.hfhMloBR.zcT1B4q7.dpbs)

Being tested just this year for PD.  Tests inconclusive either way at present. Which hey appears OK to me  :)

Very sad.

Went to a load of Rondstadt concerts when I was a youngster in SoCal and thought she was lovely still the last time I seen her.

When I see this pic I always think of Debbie Harry for some reason - must be the smile & the lips...

Gday Richo, you are on the other side of the country to me, but I have a standing offer to visit some mates in Perth, so will chase you up when I'm over there.  Yeah, quite familiar with the "challenges", it is a journey that I'm undertaking myself - sure does knock you around a bit.  Thanks for the call for patience, we can be pretty frustrating...

Tim, good luck with your tests mate.  In actual fact there is no specific "test for PD", it is more that you get checked for tumours, strokes, diabetes, and other stuff; and in the absence of any other diagnosis, and if you are showing typical symptoms, and you respond to PD treatment, then you become part of the club.  I don't want to be welcoming you Tim, but if you do join the club then please contact me and I'll help where I can.

Firko, thanks for raising the topic, and it is a sign of the health of these forums that we can discuss such issues.  True, greater awareness is needed, and there is a lot of misinformation around.  And a lot of GP's under-educated on the matter.  I'm doing quite a bit of stuff with Parkinsons Vic, so if any of you find yourself close to PD and needing / wanting support, please let me know and I'll put you in contact with the right people.

Also Firko, I think from memory you responded to my post about the Mk1 Ford Escort that some of my friends and former students are donating their time to restore for me.  Well we have decided to dedicate the car to the Parkinsons Disease cause, and are doing it up as a tarmac rally car for entry into a few targa events.  Plan is to enter it under a Parkinsons themed "brand" (logo, website etc underway), and link it to established PD charity organisations.  Trajectory is to have it in display state at least by March, so will see if we can bring it along to HBBB.

The project is getting some good support, and we already have a sierra 5 speed gearbox, Minilite wheels, Dellorto carbs, sandblasting, paint and body repairs donated.  I'm gathering photos to post an update on here.

If anyone here wants to get involved, even just to pop into the workshop (northern suburbs of Melb) to check it out and have a chat one weekend, please PM me.

Cheers, and sorry to distract us all from our nostalgic rock chick fantasies...

That's brilliant. I know it's an old cliché but if there's any way I can contribute to such a good cause drop me a PM. I reckon the little Escort is the perfect choice for Targa style events. With their nippy performance and good (for the era) handling it'd be more fun than an hour jelly wrestling with Jennifer Hawkins. I've long had the ambition to convert my TWR Jag over to Targa style trim but my preoccupation with old dirt bikes and a slight lack of folding matter have put that on the back burner. I'm a bit hesitant to do the big camber front end and roll cage work on what is still essentially my weekend plaything.......one day, who knows.  Sorry for the thread deviation.....oh, wait a minute I started the thread.

Nice one Firko, love the minilites.  I'd expect such period-correctness from a VMX aficionado!  I'm not so sure if I'll ever get to experience the full comparison you mention, but I'll certainly tell you what it is like the drive the Escort :)

And thanks for the offer of help, I'll certainly contact you about that.  It would be great if we could put up some sort of display at some of the upcoming 2014 events such as HBBB, Classic Dirt or the like, so any contacts or advice on that front would be great.  Happy to travel out of Vic too.

Cheers Richo, will chase you up when I'm over there.  I have contacts at each of the engineering unis (ECU, Curtin, UWA), plus also have a good friend tied up pretty heavily with Wanneroo Raceway, so should be near you at some time in my travels.  Perth ain't too big anyway.

Thanks gents,

Geoff

I have been hearing about symptons from PD, MS, and MND all being somehow connected/similar.
And of one long term sufferer of MS suddenly being re-diagnosed by a different Doctor who sent  tests to America for Lyme disease which came back positive with subsequent treatment for that  being effective..
My brother passed away 1yr ago with PD and I having  seen the devestation of MS and MND I think all posibilities should be investigated. I have been told that OZ medicos say Lyme disease does not exist in this country but the facts are out there.

Some of these things are just too distressing to witness.

Thanks Richo, no, it's a GM turbo 400 auto with a B&M shift kit. They didn't make very many manuals, the original Moss 4 speed fitted to the very first '75 model didn't handle the torque of the V12 very well so they dropped the option and a manual was never again offered with the V12, even with the TWR. I'm planning on fitting a 5 speed Toyota Supra or Tremec 6 speed box when the auto finally shits itself.
