In the MOMS for the Pre 90 classes in says "Acceptable for Pre 90 class are machines and components built up to and including the 1989 model. The only exception to this rule is where the model remains unaltered after this date."
What I would like to know is what changes were made to the YZ/WR 490/500s after 1989. eg 1990, 1991 etc models.

89 to 90 yz490- graphics and std bars

WR 500 uses the later 250 frame and swingarm etc from the 250's.
So definitely out.

So a 1990 YZ 490 could be considered legal for Pre 90 as it really is a carry over model.

Yes.
Only very minimal suspension changes between 87 and 88, 89 90 exactly the same other than slight could changes/ graphics.
The most notable change of the pre 90 YZ490 years was 86 to 87- suspension changes and port changes.
