Title: Early KTM/Penton ID
Post by: Gippslander on October 30, 2013, 12:43:38 pm
Considering a purchase  ;D

Have a frame number only.

Anybody know what frame number 54604 89312 is?

Should be an early 400, but what year exactly and is it an MX'r or an Enduro?

Thanks

email Alan at [email protected] him some photos to. The 54 part of the frame No indicates it could be a 250.

The engine No has the year of manufacture on it. It will be near the right side ignition cover, near the engine mount. It will have a number separate eg 6 54______. The 6 would be 1976. The month of manufacture with be on the cases below the counter shaft sprocket. Anything after September etc is the next year eg 1977.

Alan will also be a good source for parts.

I'd say April 1976 - "604"

Adrian What model do you think this one would be.

Frame No  550 03260

Engine No  6-550 4039

The month indicator below the countershaft sprocket 8 month 76.

It is white. I had a white 400 in 1977. This is why I bought this one.

I wanted a 77. The bike I had in 1977 had a white tank. Could it of been a 1976 model anyway. It had Ceriani forks.

76 & 77 are virtually identical, usually the 77's have the 2 position foot pegs and came with Marzocchis but i have heard of Cerriannis on the 2 peg models and mazocchis on the single position peg models
I personally would think a motor produced in August of 76 would of been in a 77 model, but that's just my opinion, frame serial numbers had no break point between 76 & 77 just a continuous run of the 550 numbers.
The frames were different where seat mounted.
Here is a pic of a 77 frame

I bought my MC5 250 in January 1977. I believe this to be part of the first Flood shipment. Engine stamp is June 76. I have a GP frame 400 that is stamped Sept 76. I reckon this was also in the first Flood shipment of enduro bikes. 250s were red and 400s white until the 1978 models. My MC5 came with Cerriani forks. Not sure when they went to Marzocchi but probs in the first 78 model shipment to Floods. Australia could be different to the rest of the world due to choice, cost or availability. It can be a guess
