Title: Carpal tunnel operation
Post by: John Orchard on October 23, 2013, 11:38:48 am
Seein as it's quite a common complaint for older motorcyclists I thought I'd offer my thoughts on how my 'carpal tunnel' operation worked.  I had a problem with my right hand getting pins & needles and losing feel after a couple of laps of the track.  Turned out, after electrical shock testing, that I had crushed nerves in my right wrist.

My regular surgeon (lol) cut into me last week (I shouldn't have taken the KX400 out one day after the op), below is the pic, I get the stitches out tomorrow.  I was surprised how painful it is to ride with after the op, it feels a touch better every day though, I'm riding again this Fri, I'm not getting the pins & needles in bed anymore so I'm expecting it to be good to ride with (once the healing has taken place).

I had both mine done at the same time (had to do some fast talking to convince the surgeon to do that), it was the best thing ever. Funny thing is your little finger is on a different nerve so you may still get pins & needles in it, but otherwise no problems for me.

Did the surgeon mention anything about giving it a chance to heal before riding again? J

They dont go nuts with stitches anymore, the spin I got was that it is left open to let any infection out.

Had a good cut like that some time ago about 2 inches long from the base of my "pointer", finger that is, on the palm of my hand, went to work the next day, construction, the day after did a 600 k road ride and rode home the day after.

Worked the next week and pulled out the stitches on the fri, she healed great, can hardly see the scare.

Might be a bit risky doing MX but anything else should be ok.  ;D

With the greatest of respect John, I hope you were joking about taking the KX out ::). A good friend of mine had his carpal done a few years ago and a week later he was packing down in a rugby scrum. Needless to say he stuffed up the good work the surgeon had done and his wrist has never been anything above 50% again, despite a repeat go at it. I know its frustrating mate but these things need time to heal.

Ummm sorry Mark, those picks of me riding in the KX400 thread, that was the next day, had to hold on with my fingertips over the bumps, oh well story of my life, bit hard to change now.

I had my left hand done first a few years back. Never realised before that which hand I used to wipe my ass with. Try doing it with the other hand its just not the same.  :-\  :-[ Jimson

I am booked in for 7 Jan for my carpal tunnel (keyhole) surgery. No riding for at least 2-4 weeks at best I think. Terrible suture job! Heal well John.

Looks like I have this Forking thing as well, I noticed a sore throttle hand/wrist when on my roadie after only half an hours riding holding a steady throttle, pins & needles in bed at night,no grip strength etc, etc, I now realise it has been affecting my dirt biking not being able to stay out on the track for too long,Crap >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Anybody know of some good exercises/stretches etc to stave off the inevitable carve up for as long as possible :)

You can get a brace that straps on to your hand wrist that you wear at night. Jimson

Had my right wrist done about 6 months ago, was riding in 4 days, no more pins & needles, love it!

that sounds like "trigger finger" husky, mate i play tennis with has that problem too, smallest finger cramps up & won't release, think his doc suggested cutting something, he wasn't keen on getting it done (so far), :P

I've had a "trigger finger" fixed Frank. It's a simple day surgery thing where they release the tendon which is getting caught on something where it runs.. A small nip in your hand & it's all good. I'm really glad I got mine done, even though it wasn't a huge problem it was very annoying having to flick my finger open all the time. Not a bad party trick though.
Cheers,
K
