Behrens was the best jumper of his era and I well remember him taking out the Golden Breed banner over the start finish jump at Jilliby Park in 1975....the same meeting that Frenchman Michel Combes flogged everyone on a works Montesa.
I recently saw John and he still looks fit enough to race......but isn't interested.

Post by: PeterK on October 16, 2013, 10:31:37 am: Firco, I remember that as well as Jilliby had a jump coming out of the dam just before the finish line. Will have to dig up the pics from Jilliby as I think I may have that shot. Jilliby was one of my favourite tracks and had a bit of everything.

This pic was taken at the 1975 International meet at Amaroo Park in November in which Gaston Rahier attended. #B on a Suzuki I think it was one of Gaston’s buddies from Belgium but not sure so if someone has a program from that meet would love a copy of the riders list as I have about 10 rolls of negs to name.

It looks like it could be the Australian title meeting in Tasmania, in 75 it was a sandy track.

Thanks for the link but alas the numbers they used in NSW are different but it may help a bit. Not sure if the Japanese guy rode in NSW.
I took 138 pics at that meet so will scan some more and put them up.

I have most of the programs for 1977 but Lester Rowley on his CCM only appears in the 1977 final round of the Mr Mx series. He may have come to Jilliby meet which was before Mr MX but his name is not in the program.

Check out the surgical start rubber. It was a ball tearer if you got in its way after release.

The post racing career drug/alcohol addiction and associated mental problems that eventually contributed to his death is one of our sports truly sad stories. That's a great shot of John Behrens doing an old school cross up too. I know that interstaters didn't get to see Behrens as much as us here in NSW....more's the pity. He was a truly spectacular racer that would have been far more at home with today's airtime oriented motocross style. I saw him a few months ago and he's as fit, if not fitter than in his racing days from triathlon competition.

yep Mr Motocross saw him at Claredon got to ride with him if and when I qualified :o

I remember thinking 'who would want to ride one of those dinosaurs (the CCM) LOL
Also remember John Behrens jumping the quarry at Tivoli that year. Amazing. He was good for 4th or 5th I think.
