Title: value of a Maico 490 , i know, i know
Post by: Ktm181 on October 11, 2013, 10:13:41 am

Painful open ended subject i know, but here goes.....

First let me say an 490 Mega 2 Maico, both MC & GS ( i've ridden both, but a looong time ago) are a very nice bike, especially the MC on a fast track, the engine is a killer, they steer nice, shite brakes and reasonable back end, close to best twin shock rear end, the '83  twin shock Husky is better IMO, rare and very pretty and all that, AND there are more around the tracks now than back in '81 (go figure!)....but what are they currently worth, one changed hands in last 3 mths for around 9 grand, a very nice one by the looks of it, i reckon there was around 9 grannds worth new parts on it!! (plus the original bike!), now there is a roller on Ebay, powder coated frame, no shocks, decent wheels but no brakes, forks look original with good chrome but not rebuilt or anything, motor reportedly had a FULL rebuild, no reason to doubt it either, this seller is, by all reports the genuine article and a good guy, SO by looks of it it needs about 5k to get it finished properly, maybe a bit more or less depending on the standard you want, SO WHY is it sitting at $2850 today, i thought we'd be all over it ????? WHATS IT WORTH???  For that matter where are all the Mega 2 250 hiding? I dont remember many from back in '81 either, twin shocks were pretty much dead then and 250 were pretty slow when still air cooled and peaky, whats everyones opinions? Come on, spill your guts, we need some heated discussion....well i do!

Hell, i'd even like to get hold of one myself either 490 or 250, i rode Huskies back then and hated Maico's, well not really, i'm a bit of a bike hore, i love to ride them ALL, but i did need to keep "face" with Roy and Hans!

confusion on my mind,
Kt.

Anyone prepared to pay 10K for a bike is not interested in restoring it. For 10 K they just want turn key.

Thanks Paul, not sure i want another project that involves initial spend plus another 5k at the moment, i like to but i like riders, nothing too immaculate, decent original is what turns me on, i am just thinking this would be an interesting discussion.

I have a very original RM500d, best i have seen (stock original) since about 1984 i reckon, i guess values applies to this sort of thing too, it doesnt need a thing though.

Back to the Maico, what do you reckon? If the motor is rebuilt to a good standard, meaning all bearings, new rod/big end, piston/bore etc the motor has got to be worth $1500 on its own, maybe more if you are really after one, i thought there would be 10 people all over this listing, will be interested to see what it gets to....

be interesting to see, if it needs $4-5K spent on it i reckon its about what its worth now (to me anyways and i'm not bidding!), i'd imagine like all of us he's into it for more than that.

You are right you could easy throw that much at it I reckon if not more,$2850 + $5000 = $7850 ;)

Funny how the money crunching comes out to work out the end dollars. If it was a $1500 special in need of a full resto heaps would be onto it without the calculator coming out. Then promptly spend a fortune getting it up to spec.
With regards to the mega 2 250, they are anything but slow and extremely rideable. Best evo250 I've owned.

The problem at the mo is does anyone have the cash to buy this? we all know its value and what we would think its worth if it was ours. but there is a decided tailing off on "toys" and I see all sorts of things hitting the market lately. If he has to sell it may go cheap but I think there will be a "cascade" in the last 20 mins

$3500 was the reserve but he told me he'd take it off ebay for $4000, so it looks like Paul is correct. Pretty good money for half a bike.

Good result for what still needs at lest 4k spent on it, good on him, bet it owes that at least.  Now who is the lucky new owner?

Its funny i have been into VMX for a long time, in the early days it was about the bikes and what we could find in sheds and swap meets  etc, big fields at all events and people enjoying the bikes and simplicity of a bygone era.

But like everything it has become all about $$$$$$$$$$ to some ,whats this worth whats that worth , he paid to much , hes dreaming. Small fields at events and events cancelled due to lack of interest , is VMX becoming like its contemporary cousin ? the one i stepped away from to enjoy the simplicity of VMX .

Bill, its not becoming "like" it, it ALREADY is exactly like it!  Just riders with a fast approaching expiry date!!!  AND MORE INTERESTING bikes and riders i might add, the modern stuff is just so disposable, they are off loaded and the latest scooter "hire purchased", kids buying fun instead of houses!  At least its a healthy pass time ay?

yeah maybe.  The thing i love is the bikes.  Started with wanting to buy back the ones i used to race, harking back i suppose....50+ and all that, but change of heart, now i am chasing bikes i never got to own back then, NOT ones i even wanted to race back then, just the little luxuries i guess, ride em, look after for a bit and then move em on in a couple years, at the moment an RM465, RM500 & Maico Magnum are keeping me smiling, and some timein near future a Maico Mega 2 will join them...either 250 or 490, dont really mind which...why? why not i say!  Life is for living, living for me is getting my wife back to good health and then bikes after that.

WHO WANTS TO SELL ME A MEGA 2?  Dont want a garage queen, just something clean and tidy, complete and running...price adjustable depending of course!!!

People are buying the more iconic bikes as works of arts and not riding them as they value them too much and in some cases are not keen to use them in anger any more. Not good for VMX as a sport, unless the trend is to cheaper more modern bikes, but these do not exist and are expensive to race due to the technology involved.
