My money is on '78. It's cool, just way to pricey.

the frame Number say it all
801 106077
The 8 = 1978
The 01 = January
the 106077 are Numbers
Now if the frame Number started with 550 106077 yes it could be a 1976 or 77
Some 1976 and 1977 MC5 and the 1977 GS6 did not use the KTM datting code system .
Sume used a 550 ##### Number
Why I dont know That may have been Made from a special event Eg 6 day ????
More Beer will need to be drank to work that out ...at the Next KTM owners Day ...

Thats not the engine number, its a part number....
should be for a 250 , 8-54xxxxxxx or maybe 7-54xxxxxxx as the engine cases would been on the shelf....

Yep that the Part Number all wrigth..
54 = 250cc
30 = Engine parts
003 = the number given to the engine case in the parts book pitchure
010 = part number
The Engine number will just under the Front engine Bolt rigth hand side (foot brake side )
and the Numbers will be just like goolys said ...
and on the left side under the engine bolt will be the last part of the engine number iand that should match ..
if that do they are a match pair .
if not well who know what happen Basket case then ..

So 6-5411539 would be 76 ?

Remember your just going off an engine number stamping...The frame setup will dictate the year model of the complete bike, especially after thirty years and possible engine swap. But yes, the 'Engine' you mention is most likely a '76.
There are cast dials in the cases too. Billy C's cousins 1974 175 (which he has owned since new), has engine casting dates of 1972...
