Hi all just signed up and I will be getting my hands on a Yamaha 1980 yz465 in the next couple of weeks and will be doing a complete rebuild on it trying to get it to look good.
Has anyone built one on here and is there anything I should be carefully of or should pay more attention to?.
-
Hey Reece
"Ted" has a real nice 465
If you PM him I'm sure he will send you some pics
-
Ok thanks I'll try and find him.
-
welcome aboard from Unzud
-
Welcome aboard.
The G frames have a habit of rusting and then breaking at the front downtube - moisture collects at the bottom of the gusset.
RHS side covers are a PITA to get, but there are functional aftermarket ones available.
Other than that, they are pretty well bomb-proof bikes. Updating the shock to modern internals works wonders if you're building a race bike.
-
Just wondering Nathan what parts do I need to do as I am looking at doing most of build myself.
-
Depends on how bad it is now! ;D
They're pretty straight-forward bikes - most bits are easy to get, there's lot's of interchangability with other Yamaha models, and they were pretty robust in the first place.
What are you planning on doing with the bike once it is finished? That makes a big difference to your plan of attack.
-
Would like to start racing it or maybe rebuild and sell not 100% yet but leaning towards racing it.
-
Depending on the condition but if you intend to restore it ( properly ) and sell, you will do your arse big time.
If you want to turn it into a weapon and race it ( keep it ) I can give you contacts and sites to do this. It won't be cheap ( 5-10 K ) irrespective of what others will tell you but in my opinion you will have a bike that will be at the top of the pile in Evo
-
That would be great ted if you could pass some info on.
Here's a picture I have of it but haven't seen it yet hopefully in a week or two.
Engine has been rebuilt so not to bad of a start hopefully got it for a good price.

How long ago was the engine rebuilt? By owner or others?
Judging by the overall condition of the bike I would totally discount the chances of the engine being rebuilt. I bought one in similar condition for $500. I only kept the frame, motor ( cases ) hubs, electrics, seat base, lower triple clamp and stem, forks, shock, swingarm. All of which had to be fully rebuilt, painted
As mine was a H model it came with a Twin Leading Shoe front brake , which you will need if you want it to stop.
Don't be put off with the task of restoring it. If done properly you will have a super competitive bike and also a very reliable one. Second to none in my opinion.
Let me know if you are going to restore it properly and I will PM my contacts and approx prices. You then simply take out the labour charges that you can do yourself.
-
I will be restoring it back to factory as I like that look so if you could send contacts and any other info would be great.
-
Is there any other front double leading brake that fit my model as I have been looking and expense so seeing if there's an cheaper one but if not I'll have to get one.
-
The right TLS front brake is found on YZ250H, YZ465, and YZ125L. They're expensive for a reason... although they come up at semi-sensible prices fairly regularly.
Ted does his bikes to a very high standard. If you're prepared to compromise on finish, then you can build a very good race bike for less.
The main things to do are:
get a good idea of what the bike needs;
set your goals, and;
do the maths before starting.
There are very, very few resto disaster stories that don't break at least one of those rules.;)
Regardless, it is VERY hard to make money by restoring bikes. Most times you can do that, is because you happened to have the parts in the shed and/or you got the base bike for a steal.
If you got the bike for a steal, then the easiest way to maximise your profit is to take it home, wash it and re-advertise it.
If making a profit is your motivation, forget messing around with old dirt bikes - you've gotta be in it for the love of it!
-
I will be keeping it as just been watching videos on YouTube and my mind is made up.
-
Doesn't the YZ125L have the backing plate lug in the wrong position Nathan?
-
You won't be disappointed. I will never part with mine. 8)
Have a look at my 250 "progress pics" thread. The cosmetics are all the same.
Endless help on here. Just keep putting up pictures to keep us interested ;D
-

Nope.
Despite what logic suggests, the 125L has the old style lower legs with an angled brake lug and integral axle mounts.
They have adjustable dampening, and the upper tubes are waisted between the triples.

I was just wondering how guys get their engines back to looking new is it soda blasting as I watched a couple of videos on youtube guys blasting motor still together and it comes up looking good.
I would like to have the clean look as the frame will be done black.
-
Reece, If you go into General Discussion and search Teds YZ there is a pic of my 465 just after I restored it
-
That is a sweet looking bike there ted.

If you mean the barrel & head being back to bare metal then vapour blasting is the way to go. Had my 465 done that way & it looks a million bucks, head & barrel had to be separate to allow full access to all the fins

Got it home today now the work starts.

Get a parts manual so you can work out what bolts go where.
detail photograph everything as you strip it down
decide on rider or display finish.
work out if you will powdercoat or paint.
clean the bits to be powdercoated and make sure they are clean of all grease
put bolts into threads
look at plating all the bolts and any other bits and pieces such as kickstart etc
water blasting alloy bits can bring them up nice
enjoy
-
The kick starter looks like a DT1 or RT1 same for the gear leaver . Here is a pic of my old 465 not a show room queen but a good race bike .

Nice looking bike that's what I'll be going for setting it up for racing.
-
Looks like I'm already up for a new back rim and brake anyone know of what rims are good to replace it with.
-
I've also just got a YZ465 project, but I think I'm starting from a lower base :-\
It did come with an engine ( I use the term loosely) and a few bits and pieces. I bought it on a whim as it was in the next town and I was driving past ::)

My H model came from the states fitted with sun rims, whatever rims you fit will need to be drilled to fit. Excel & smpro should both be available in Australia undrilled & your wheelbuilder should be able to drill them to the correct pattern

This might help with parts if you don't already have something.

All stripped a couple of free hours and beers no worries.

There was a few dodgy parts done but all good now to start looking for parts and all that other good stuff.
-
Engine painted just need a few things to finish off it.

Might just be the camera angle but it looks like your intake manifold is cracked, would pay to replace it if in any doubt, have seen them listed new but not sure if they really are, hotfootmoto make new ones though
-
Motolink Yamaha in the UK does the manifolds as well. I have bought 2 now with the boost bottle outlet. Have bought some stuff from hotfootmoto as well and I personally think the motolink part is superior. Looks more like the original. Not sure if they do them without the boost bottle port.
They are good to deal with as well.
-
Yer intake has cracks on it but not all the way through but will looking at getting another down the track.
-
Anyone after a yz465 project as I don't have time or room to complete project so has to go open to offers would like to sell together and buyer to pick up or organize freight.
-
Sold

Shit that was quick. More patience needed Grasshopper

Why didn't that suprise me Ted, I only had to read the first couple of posts :)
-
I'll never sell my 465. Or any of the others. My grandson can race them in 20 years time.
You coming up to the Nats in Qld. Should be a massive drink ;D
GO MANLY
-
No mate, don't own an old enough bike!

;D Its now in my shed , thanks Reece !
250 3R4 roller with 465 donk ,, 4V4 top & LH case is 3R5 while RH case is 4V4 , fun & games .
Im glad I have a 3R5 roller doing nothing ;)
-
It should all go together neatly anyway :-\
250H and 465H use the same frame etc etc. Was the G different ?
-
I'm not that clued in yet with the older yz's, saying that they look very similar...
This motor needs attention, but I have a fresh 1980 465 motor so yeah it should pull together fine..
& I won't be doing a detailed finish. Just clean & safe. ;)
-
Awesome 8)
Looks like another beat will get to see life on a track again. Post up some photos, we always like to see whats going on
-
Im not overly into Yamahas but it seems to be taking over my shed...Yellow can... fade to white LMAO....the reason I have plenty of 465 stuff is because I bought the 83 yz490 off Ludo? (what a gentleman) & it has a 465 top etc,,,
then got a job-lot of 465 stuff from Bathurst , ending up with a 3R5 complete motor with fresh topend for 100 bucks ,,,,now this has come along,so im thinking why not put this sucker together ;D
,,,ask the Enduro guys ,,,my photo skills are parched at best ::)
ps , just picked up a clean 465 rear wheel today,,,the one that came with the buy was cracked badly & a 250 rim..
-
Just like to thank Reece & his lovely wife ,,,, all the best :)
-
Hey Glen, Before you get too carried away with having 465 top ends aplenty, split the motor and check the shift forks, shift drum and all gears. Especially third gear.
-
Your more then welcome glen glad to see someone will be able to get it back to its glory.
Keep the photos of build look forward to see it.
-
Thanks Ted !
Yes Im hoping something is salvageable ,,,otherwise 490 four speed here I come ;)
chasing an airbox / rear brake hub & torque arm if anyone willing to part , ill buy :D
regards Glen..
