Title: flat slide
Post by: TonyB on May 26, 2008, 11:16:07 am
Got a dead Bing on my KTM495 that I need to replace, but the options are big money so i was wondering if anyone would care or refuse me to ride on club days if I fitted a flat slide to this Kato (1983 model). Trev would QVMX not allow me to ride? I know I won't come in the top three spots in Pre 85 (probably in the bottom 3 spots) anyway so I dont think its an unfair advantage?? anyone care to respond on where i stand? ::)

IIRC mboddy posted the first introduction of the flatslide which were Lectrons and EI's in about '78 mikuni a bit later.I can't think why you would get pinged for that seems very petty to me.

I would believe the dates are accurate

hey Tony, i'm just checking my 08 MOMs and page 153, #18.6.0.4 b, clearly states Flat-slide carbys are prohibited.
now, just take a stroll around the pits and see how many bikes are actually using them already and i know of at least 3, 2 of them run evo class and one of them pre-78. go figure, and thats bmcc and qvmx.
turn a few more pages over to page 157, #18.7.14.2, and it blurbs on about the exception to the GCR's being if you can provide proof it was used in the day, then no problems.
so get your proof, and all will be fine.
but really, i think you made the mistake of chatting in the wrong place first.
pre-85 in my opinion {and i'm not that familiar with the class} should be allowed to run the flat-slide.
cheers!

great  :) i'll look for a good flatslide, I nearly crapped myself at the prices of Bings. I would however prefer to see a Bing on but i will have to settle for a flat slide.

MY 1983 RM250D HAS A FLAT SLIDE CARB AS STANDARD FROM THE FACTORY SO I COULD NOT SEE WHY IT WOULD BE AN ILLEGAL TO REPLACE THE BING WITH A FLAT SLIDE ON AN 83 KTM.

Please Read

18.12.1  Classic Motor cross and Dirt Track .

Must Be OEM in the Evolution Class Eligibilly

So If it came out with a Flat slide then its ok But if it was Not OEM than
Sorry

Pre 85Read 18.714.4 All components will of the period of machine was manufactured .

So I read this as You could run a Flat slide as long it was Made or came out on a Bike that was Made Befor 1985 .

So I read it as a No for Evo  and a Yes for pre 85 but it must have came out befor 1985 .

On the carbie subject can anyone tell me any reason a larger carb on a KLX 250 would not work. Standard is 32mm and I was going to put on a 36mm. Also would a flat slide or round slide be better? Thanks.
Nev.

Hi KLXRev,
Back in the day I had a KLX with a 34mm Lectron and it was great. Ajay also had a KLX with a 1.5" pipe and a 36mm Lectron that worked really well.
You can still buy Lectron [pre-jetted] direct from Lectron in the States. I got a 34mm from a wrecker in WA that was selling them off a few years ago.
Good luck

Earth to Rosmar come in Rosmar......................
I looked at the MoMS and I would interpret the flat slide rule to be applying to pre 75 only.Mainly because there is a whole list of bit under 'classic' dirt track and mx then goes on to pre 78 and Evo.
Time for the 'interpretation officer', rosmar where are you......................
