Thanks Mark. Great article and they didn't seem to change much between the 77 model and my 78. The front brake cable grabbing the tire or hooking over the fork tube and slamming on the brake is very familiar :o

Hi Steve. Interesting that a '77 model 390 AMX is not mentioned in any Husky ID lists, but Dirt Bike write that the one they tested was officially a '77 model. Just trying to pick the differences to the '78 model, the only thing noticeable seems to be the smaller tube swingarm on the '77 model. I have '77 and a'78 Husky swingarms somewhere in my shed, so I might dig them out and take a photo of them side by side. Also, I think that I have that magazine with the Husky article that you are looking for , so I will look for that as well.

My 78 swing arm is approx. 32mm OD where it is round and near the shock mount it is flattened to approx 21mm x 41mm. Good Swedish CrMo but still skinny as all hell.
I always think the poor old auto gets the run out bits from the previous years CR model so I would not be surprised if the 78 CR has a meatier swing arm and fancy pants tapered roller headstock etc!

The evolution of Husky swingarms, with the top one being from a '76 CR360, the middle one from a '77 CR390 and the bottom one from a '78 CR390 (or 390 AMX ?).

It's interesting that they got rid of the corner gusseting on the later swingarm. The middle one looks the sturdiest (but heaviest I guess).
-
Be great to see some of these in Pre 78
-
Even right up to 83'/84' they stuck to the basic bottom design-must be good stuff

My 78 390 AMX is very original and has the top swing arm in Marks photo. The poor old autos certainly got the hand me downs :o. Doe this make my 78 auto eligible for pre if I restrict the suspension gravel to 9 inches?
-
Studying the photos in the October 77 Dirt Bike test of the 390 auto posted above I am pretty sure it also runs the same swing arm as the 76 CR shown in the photos above.
-
I took some measurements, because the swingarm in the 390 Auto test looks longer than a '76 CR360 arm. The '76 CR360 and '77 CR390 swingarms are both made out of 32mm O.D tube, but the '77 swingarm is 30mm longer at 555mm overall (compared to 525mm for the '76). The '78 CR 250/390 swingarms are made out of 40mm O.D tube.

Confirmation the 78 390 AMX uses same swing arm as 76 CR model....hand me down on the auto is even more serious than I suspected :o. Only one cross brace used.
