Title: Suzuki TM/RM ignition interchange.
Post by: firko on August 20, 2013, 12:33:15 pm
Can anyone tell me if an RM370/400 Suzuki CDI box can be used in a TM400 ignition? Part of the problem with the TM is apparently the ignition mapping being somewhat erratic. I was told by the previous owner that my TM400 has an RM black box but that doesn't appear to be true upon inspection. Is there anything worth trying besides reverting to the TS points ignition?

I'd read somewhere that TS185 CDI unit was the go on TM400's.

That'd  be good if true...I actually have a TS185 CDI unit here somewhere. Can anyone, Doc, Stewy or any other Suzukiphiles add anything?

Can't supply you with an answer to that one ..... I know the Pe 250 T/X work well on Tm 250  ;)
Heard  Pe 175 are the go on TM 400  but can not confirm this.
Rode  - Doc's  Ts/Tm 400 at Coffs in 2007  and boy that thing scared me for life...... never again.

I don't know the answer to your question as such, but maybe the complete ignition can be used. I have be told that the black box off a RM 125 works on a 370. It allows them to rev higher. The 370 black box was restricted, this is something that was done in 1976/77 etc.

Davey Crocket may know more.

Seeing that the TM400 ignition is made by PEI and the TS/PE/RM ignitions are made by Kokusan Denki would there be a marriage problem between the two? I'm going to try and fit the TS ignition box today and if it gets spark I'll have part of the question answered.

PEI is just the name Suzuki gave there ign system Firko....just like Full Floater....Monoshock etc. Mr Kokosan san made em all....like KYB suspension in Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki and even Honda occasionally even though they own Showa.

Yep, PEI just stands for Pointless Electronic Ignition.

Pointless Electronic Ignition.
It's so obvious I'm embarrassed. I guess I knew that at one time but age and 12 months of serious narcotic pain killers have erased a lot of my hard drive.
