Title: Recommendations for fork tubbe rechroming.
Post by: Nathan S on May 20, 2008, 10:52:18 pm
I'm sure this has been done before, but I can't find it ATM.

I've got a pair of TM250 fork legs - one has some fairly deep pitting - I'd guess the pits are about 1mm deep, and about 1mm square .
Is there a limit to what can be repaired?

Where?
How much?

I rang a place in Wollongong, and they quoted me $300 each leg...  :o
A place in Canberra was talking about buffing the legs down and then chroming over the top.... which is never gonna work on a sealing surface...

TIA.

Nathan,
A proper job sees the pits and dents brazed over. The tubes are then centre ground to their nominal size. Then rechromed and again ground back to their finished size. I don't know if there is a limit to the size of the pits - as long as they weren't structural I wouldn't think there would be a problem.

Sean at SOS in Penrith [02] 4732 5533 can help you out.

Nathan we can do it for $120.00 per leg  +Straighteng if needed. But there new tubes on the net for $150.00 also.

i've just had my RT1 fork legs done here in brisbane by RAD hardchrome for $140 a leg and am very happy with the finish. i've shown them a couple of fork legs i'd like to get done in the future that have some pretty serious {my opinion} pitting and they seem to think it'll be fine. sounds a bit like what you've described. RAD hardchrome 07-32785056 and then you'll need to add a bit more for postage.
my take is that hardchrome is better quality than NOS chrome {which is crap, because here we are needing to do it again!}.

I've been using Diamond Hard Chrome Pty Ltd. 27 Cosgrove Rd ENFIELD NSW 2136  (02) 9642 0513. for years and they've always had my stuff done within the time quoted and for a good price. For my DT1 forks I paid $250 for both legs and they were quite pitted.

Nathan, I use '82ish DR250S inners legs in all my 35mm TM and RM zook forks. A tad longer on the TM but no real issue and a much better chance of finding a pair on the cheap ;)
